South Dakota State athletic director Fred Oien, along with head women’s basketball coach Aaron Johnston, announce the hiring of Katie Falco as a new women’s basketball assistant coach.

“We are very pleased to have Katie join our staff,” said Johnston. “Her experiences as a player at Northern Iowa and a coach at Montana State are exactly what we were looking for in this position. It was easy to see that she puts a high priority on serving the needs of the student-athletes, which is the same emphasis that we currently have in the program.”

Falco joins the Jackrabbit staff after three seasons at Montana State University in Bozeman, Mont.

A former all-conference player at Northern Iowa, Falco fulfilled a vast array of duties at Utah State prior to coming to MSU, including scouting and game tape breakdown.

An All-Missouri Valley Conference player for the University of Northern Iowa in 2003, Falco finished the season ranked second in the league in scoring at 18.2 points a game. Falco also earned Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.

Falco earned UNI's Purple and Old Gold Award for academic and athletic achievement as a senior, and finished first in school history in free throw percentage (82.4%) and free throws made (411), second in games played (116), and fifth in scoring (1,343). She topped her senior year off by earning Academic All-American accolades.

While in school, Falco stayed active by helping with the Adolescent Diabetes Foundation, Special Olympics, Boys and Girls Club, and the Missouri Valley's "Just Read" program.

Falco replaces Travis Brewster, who resigned his position in May.
