Zack Schafer
Position: Volunteer Assistant
Alma Mater: Mercyhurst (Erie, PA)
Zack Schafer is in his fourth season as a wrestling coach at South Dakota State University.
After a two-year stint as a graduate assistant under Coach Liles, Schafer graduated from South Dakota State with a Master's degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 2010. He currently works on campus as an admissions counselor.
Schafer was a three-time Division II All-American at Mercyhurst College in Erie, Pa. In 2005, Schafer placed fourth at 165 pounds and claimed runner-up honors in 2006. In 2007, Schafer moved up to 174 pounds where he placed seventh. He was also a three-time NWCA Academic All-American.
Schafer left Mercyhurst as the all-time leader in wins (109), reversals, nearfalls, and major decisions. He was also second in pins, team points and technical falls. Schafer graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting, and served as a volunteer assistant coach at Mercyhurst during the 2007-2008 season.
The Girard, Pa. native, Schafer was a Pennsylvania high school state placewinner at Northwestern High School.
