BISHOP, Ga. - The South Dakota State Western riders scored six points and earned MVP honors in both horsemanship and reining to lead the Jackrabbits past New Mexico State by the score of 9-5 on Sunday at the Bulldog Invitational.

"I'm very proud of the team today. We fixed a lot and rode hard every step of the way," interim assistant coach Leigh Nichol said.  "It was a very big win for us and proved that hard work, teamwork and consistency pays off in the end."

The SDSU hunt seat riders tied with the Aggies, with Megan Schiffman earning MVP honors with a score of 79 on the flat. Santana Wright and Jenna Boscardin both earned points for the Jacks in over fences.

The Jacks swept horsemanship, getting points from Maggie Holzworth, Britta Barta, Lydia Placzek and Amy Mandelke, with Holzworth winning MVP with a 74.5 point ride.

Placzek and Angela Gebhart both won points for SDSU in reining, with Gebhart earning MVP with a 72 point ride to give the Jacks a 6-2 edge in the Western events, which propelled the Jacks to the win.

The Jackrabbit equestrian team returns to action or the IHSA Regionals on March 5-6 in Crookston, Minn.
