Jacks begin season in Green Bay

The 2011-12 South Dakota State men and women's swimming and diving season starts Saturday against Green Bay.

The dual is slated for an 11 a.m. start.

The Jackrabbit men's team finished third and the women second at last year's Summit League Championships. Both teams are ranked second in the Summit League preseason poll.

Seniors Kyle Avocato, Kyle Catani and Garret Schrock return for the men's team.

The team has nine newcomers this year, including eight freshmen and transfer Connor Florand.

Chris Schreier and Phil Albu look to lead the way for the men this year after outstanding freshman seasons.

Schreier won 21 events last year and broke four school records. He was also a part of four school-record relays. Schreier won the 200-yard butterfly at the Summit League Championpships.

Albu won 13 events last year and broke three individual school records along with three relays.

Seven seniors return for the women's team, including Jessica Ferley and Ashley Valdez.

Ferley won 14 events last year, broke two school records and was a part of the school-record 800 freestyle relay at the conference meet.

Valdez won eight events last year and was a part of two school-record relays.

Sophomore Andrea Budahl returns after having an outstanding freshman year with 12 wins. Budahl broke the school record in the 1,000 freestyle and was also part of the school record 800 freestyle relay at the conference meet.

Four freshmen join the women's team, along with transfers Dana Greco and Pierre native Morgan McLain.
