Jacks rally comes up short vs. Oakland
South Dakota State hung on for a 26-24 win the first set of Friday's Summit League match with Oakland, but dropped the next three sets in order to lose the match 3-1.
The Jackrabbits dropped the final three sets by the scores of 13-25, 23-25 and 21-25 to fall to 12-13 overall on the season and to 4-8 in The Summit League, while Oakland improves to 12-9 overall and 6-5 in the league.
"I though our overall energy was better tonight and that defensively we dug a lot of balls, but we need better production from all of our attackers," head coach Phil McDaniel said. "We need even play throughout the match to get a win tomorrow against IPFW."
Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbits with 15 kills and hit a match-high .429 (15-3-28). She also added a pair of block assists. Kaitlin Klingemann finished with 11 kills and a career-high seven total blocks; six block assists and a solo block.
Kelly Herrmann and Lexi Fowler both finished with double-doubles in the match. Hermann with 10 kills and 12 digs for her fourth of the season, and Fowler with a match-high 38 set assists and a career and match-high 22 digs for her eighth double-double of the season, which leads the Jackrabbits.
Meghan Bray led all players with 20 kills in the win. She also added 18 digs for a double-double. Taylor Humm also finished with 18 digs and added 15 kills for her double-double. Alissa Valentine also finished with a double-double with 25 set assists and 15 digs.
The Jackrabbits look to salvage the weekend, and their Summit League Tournament hopes, on Saturday against IPFW at 7 p.m. The Mastodons come to Brookings after a 3-1 loss at North Dakota State on Friday. Like the Jacks, the 'Dons won the first set, but dropped the next three against the Bison.
