ST. LOUIS — For the third time this season, South Dakota State University redshirt freshman quarterback Austin Sumner has received a weekly award from the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

A Brandon native, Sumner was honored as the MVFC Offensive Player of the Week after helping lead the Jackrabbits to a 43-34 Hobo Day victory over Southern Illinois on Nov. 5. He completed 16-of-28 passes for 328 yards and four touchdowns. All four of Sumner's touchdown passes, which tied a career high, came in the first half. He hooked up with Aaron Rollin on a pair of first-quarter touchdowns, covering 5 and 44 yards, then threw touchdown passes of 71 and 4 yards to Dale Moss in the second quarter.

In addition, Sumner topped the 300-yard mark for the second consecutive game and fifth time in six games.

A candidate for the Jerry Rice Award as the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision, Sumner was named MVFC Newcomer of the Week following Jackrabbit victories at Youngstown State on Oct. 8 and Missouri State on Oct. 29.

The Jackrabbits close the 2011 season Saturday afternoon at Western Illinois. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Hanson Field in Macomb, Ill., with video coverage available through the Valley Live streaming option at www.valley-football.org.
