THIS WEEK'S COMPETITION
Indiana Hoosiers – The Jacks face the Hoosiers for the third time in school history. Indiana won the first two meetings with SDSU, which took place the two seasons prior to last.
In the 2008-09 season, the Jacks met the Hoosiers in Bloomington, Ind., at the Hoosier Duals. Indiana earned all but one match en route to a 46-3 win over SDSU.
In the 2009-10 season, SDSU once again traveled to the Hoosier Duals and was once again topped by Indiana, 37-6. Dustin Walraven earned one of the two victories for SDSU in a 6-4 decision at 141 pounds.
The Hoosiers are 6-6 on the season, as the start to the Big Ten has been a gauntlet. Indiana dropped its last six duals, all to conference opponents, losing one 21-20 by tiebreaker.
Indiana is led by its nationally-ranked wrestler Matt Powless at 197 pounds. Powless is currently No. 3 in the nation and sporting a 24-3 overall record.
SIU-Edwardsville Cougars – The Jacks face the Cougars for the third time, also, the last being last season and the first being in the season prior. SIUE leads the all-time series 1-0-1.
SIUE attended the Jackrabbit Triangular last season and escaped with an 18-12 victory. Aaron Pickrel earned one of the three match wins, scoring a fall at 133 pounds.
The Cougars are 4-11 on the season and the host for this weekend's triangular. SIUE faced Indiana earlier this season at the Hoosier Duals and lost 27-15. The two meet again this weekend following SIUE vs. SDSU.
The Cougars and Jacks have one common opponent this season in Campbell. SDSU dropped the road dual to Campbell 23-15, while SIUE wrestled the Camels at the Hoosier Duals and lost 21-10.
Northern Iowa Panthers – The Jacks face the Panthers for the 39th time in school history, the first of which was in the 1953-54 season. UNI dominated the first 38 meetings with a 34-3-1 series lead. The last time SDSU beat the Panthers was in the 1972-73 season.
Last season the Panthers visited Frost Arena and left with a 38-9 win. John Nething II earned a 7-4 deicision and 165 pounds, while the remaining SDSU points were earned by a Panther forfeit at 197 pounds.
UNI is 5-4 overall and 3-1 in the Western Wrestling Conference. The Panthers defeated Air Force, the lone common opponent thus far, 33-12 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
UNI is led by two nationally-ranked wrestlers in Joe Colon at 133 pounds and Ryan Loder at 184. Colon, ranked No. 12, is 17-2 this season (5-0 in duals) and Loder, ranked No. 6, is 24-2 (8-1 in duals). Loder's lone conference loss was to the No. 1 wrestler in the nation from Wyoming.
LAST WEEK'S COMPETITION
Air Force Falcons - The South Dakota State wrestling team ran into a tough opponent Sunday, dropping its home dual to Air Force 37-6...
Freshman Dillon Reid opened the dual with a 6-4 decision at 165 pounds. Reid continues to shine in his first season at SDSU, pushing his record to 13-9.
It was a tough go for the Jacks for the next four matches, dropping two decisions, one major decision and one technical fall.
Junior Joe Skow wrestled tough at heavyweight, but dropped a 3-2 decision due to opponent riding time.
Redshirt junior Aaron Pickrel, the Jackrabbit profiled at today's dual, improved to 19-7 with a 4-2 decision at 125 pounds. Pickrel scored a takedown in the first period and rode his opponent out for the remaining 2:48. The move positioned him well for the remainder of the match, which he won with 2:40 of riding time.
That is where the scoring ended for SDSU, however, as the Falcons scored two falls, one forfeit and one major decision to close the dual.
SDSU continues its stretch of road duals in Orem, Utah, and Greeley, Colo.
The Jacks visit Western Wrestling Conference opponents Utah Valley on Friday, Feb. 10, and Northern Colorado on Sunday, Feb. 12.
Dual time at Utah Valley is set for 5 p.m. Dual time at Northern Colorado to be announced.
