McLain, Fossum win in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS — Morgan McLain and Samantha Fossum each claimed event titles to lead the South Dakota State University women's swimming and diving team on the final day of competition at the Minnesota Challenge on Saturday.

McLain, a senior from Pierre, took first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2 minutes, 3.60 seconds. She also notched a fifth-place time of 1:05.71 in the 100 breaststroke.

A freshman from Brookings, Fossum excelled in the distance events throughout the weekend, posting a winning time of 17:26.09 in the 1,650 freestyle. She added a fourth-place time in the 200 freestyle, 1:56.00.

Fossum led a Jackrabbit contingent that placed four swimmers in the top nine of the 1,650 freestyle. Emma Gaulke-Janowski was fourth in 17:47.46, Jessica Ferley placed sixth in 17:55.53 and Kelsey Boucher took ninth in 18:07.79. Ferley also turned in a 10th-place time of 2:11.01 in the 200 backstroke.

Kaitlyn Hemmingson recorded a pair of strong performances in the breaststroke events, placing fourth in the 200-yard race, 2:24.83, and seventh in the 100-yard event, 1:07.26.

SDSU also received a runner-up effort in the 800 freestyle relay as the quartet of Nicole Grimit, Fawn Weihl, Shauna Foor and Selina Gilbertson clocked a time of 7:55.81. Foor finished eighth individually in the 200 freestyle, 1:57.60.

Trina Young rounded out the Jackrabbits' top-10 finishes in the unscored meet on Saturday with ninth-place effort in the 200 butterfly, 2:13.65.

SDSU will be in training until competing at the Summit League Championships Feb. 15-18 in Rochester, Mich.
