Each qualifying tournament was awarded spots per weight class based on current year data. Each wrestler was measured on the following: Division I winning percentage; rating percentage index (RPI); and coaches ranking.
The breakdown of the 17
automatic bids per weight class for the West Regional/WWC
Championships, are as follows: 125 pounds (2), 133 (2), 141 (1), 149
(2), 157 (3), 165 (2), 174 (1), 184 (2), 197 (1) and Heavyweight (1).
In the opening match of the day, Aaron Pickrel dropped an 8-6 decision in overtime. Pickrel found himself in a five-point deficit early after a takedown and three points for a near fall. After battling his way back to within one point, Pickrel took the match to overtime with the riding time advantage. In overtime, Pickrel and his opponent were locked up, but the roll did not go in Pickrel's favor, as his opponent was awarded a takedown and the two-point victory.
Dustin Walraven battled hard in his first-round match, but time ran out as he dropped an 8-6 decision. Walraven was down 7-6 entering the final period and was in a two-point hole as the clock wound down. Walraven's last-ditch effort to earn a reversal did not materialize and his opponent held on for the win.
Nick Flynn wrestled to a scoreless tie after two periods in his first match, but was unable to hang on in the final two minutes and dropped a 3-0 decision. Flynn started down in the second period and his opponent posted two minutes of riding time. With the score tied, Flynn's opponent chose down in the third, scored a reversal and earned one point for riding time advantage.
Dillon Reid lost by fall in a tough first-round match. Reid wrestled ahead the majority of the match, but the hometown crowd propelled his UNI counterpart to a third-period fall.
Joe Rasmussen dropped his opening match 13-3. Rasmussen scored a few escapes, but was unable to gain a solid foothold in the match.
Tony Lisek wrestled two scoreless periods to start the match, but his outscored him in the third period to win 4-1. Lisek scored one point, but his opponent built a two-minute riding time advantage in the second period and recorded an escape and a takedown in the third.
Joe Skow opened the day with by facing a recent foe, his Wyoming counterpart. Skow scored three escapes, but could not gain the upper hand in a 14-3 loss.
To start the wrestleback, Aaron Pickrel lost by fall late in the third period. Pickrel wrestled from behind the entire match, but cut the lead to one as the the clock wound down, but got caught in a tough spot late.
Dustin Walraven earned the first win of the day for the Jacks with a 10-1 major decision. Walraven started well to lead in the first period by a handful of points and continued to be aggressive to build his lead and earn the win.
Nick Flynn jumped out to an early lead in the wrestleback with a first-period escape, but could not hold off his opponent in a 12-2 loss.
In another hard fought match, Dillon Reid dropped his wrestleback match 12-8. The match produced numerous lead changes and ties, but in the end it was his opponent who came out on top.
Joe Rasmussen took control of his wrestleback match early with a takedown and two near fall points. Rasmussen continued to press the entire match and earned a 7-0 shutout victory after the riding time advantage.
At the same time as Rasmussen's match, Tony Lisek wrestled his way to a 1-1 tie through three periods. The sudden victory period went without score, pushing the match into two 30-second overtime periods. In the second of the two, Lisek scored an escape, which proved to be the decisive point.
Following a first-round bye, Nick Mart dropped the semifinal match in a 9-0 major decision. Mart faced the No. 1 seed in his weight class.
Joe Skow earned an escape, but was bested by his third-seeded opponent 9-3 in the wrestleback to end his day.
In the wrestleback semifinals, Dustin Walraven posted an 8-0 major decision against the top seed. Walraven scored a second-period reversal and a near fall to build a five-point lead. In the third period, Walraven fought off several fall attempts and scored a reversal to take control of the period and the match.
Three SDSU wrestlers had their days end in the wrestleback semifinals. Joe Rasmussen dropped the wrestleback semifinal by major decision 11-1 at 174 pounds, while Tony Lisek was bested by a narrow 5-0 margin. Nick Mart also stumbled in the wrestleback semifinals with a slim 2-0 defeat.
The day ended for the Jacks when Dustin Walraven dropped the third-place match at 141 pounds by major decision, 15-6.

For each wrestler that reached the threshold in at least two of the three categories, his qualifying tournament was awarded a qualifying spot in that weight class. Each qualifying tournament, with automatic qualifying status, was awarded a minimum of one wrestler per weight class, which will go to the tournament champion, even if they did not have any wrestlers reach at least two of the three thresholds. NCAA tournament spots for each qualifying event will be awarded at the tournament based solely on place-finish.
After all of the qualifying events have concluded, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee will meet in-person to select the remaining 40 at-large qualifiers, which will be announced on March 7. All weight classes will consist of 33 wrestlers. The at-large selections will be made based on the following criteria: head-to-head competition; qualifying event placement; quality wins; results against common opponents; winning percentage; RPI; coaches ranking and the number of matches contested at that weight class.
The three-day, NCAA Championships will be then be held in St. Louis, Mo., March 15-17 at the Scottrade Center.
