South Dakota State opened its home schedule on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of South Dakota, using the bats in an 8-4 win in Game 1 and using the left arm of Pam Nicholson to earn the 1-0 win in Game 2.

The Jackrabbits improve to 6-16 overall with the sweep, and move to 2-6 in The Summit League. The Coyotes fall to 7-27 overall and to 5-6 in league play.

SDSU opened the scoring on the day, capitalizing on a South Dakota error to scored three runs in the frame, two of them unearned, to take the early lead.

The visitors cut the lead to one at 3-2 in the top of the second, only to see the Jacks bounce back with two in the bottom of the inning on Morgan McCabe's first homerun of the season. Devon Reick scored on the homer to put the Jacks back up 5-2.

South Dakota scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to get back within one run at 5-4, but Krista Honken got both of those runs back with her second homer of the season, a two-run blast that also plated Sammy Bingham.

Alex Landon singled home Reick in the bottom of the sixth to give the Jacks an insurance run and secure the 8-4 win.

The Jacks spread the wealth in the opener, as only Landon finished with more than one hit. She went 2-for-4 with the RBI.

After giving up two early runs, Kori Seidlitz settled down to earn the complete game victory. She gave up four runs, three earned, on two hits, with six walks and eight strikeouts.

Nicholson didn't get the run support in the nightcap, but she didn't need it, as she tossed the team's first shutout of the season. She gave up six hits and struck out six, but did not walk a batter and got some solid defense behind her to earn the win.

The lone run in the game came in the bottom of the second inning, when Kelly Kleppin doubled home Honken from first base.

Nicholson and the defense took it from there and kept the Coyotes off the board.

The same two teams meet again on Saturday at noon in the series finale at Jackrabbit Softball Stadium.
