Four South Dakota State University baseball players have been named all-stars in their respective collegiate summer leagues in recent weeks.

Headlining the list is right-handed pitcher Layne Somsen, who has been selected to start the Coastal Plains League All-Star Game on July 23. A member of the Fayetteville (S.C.) SwampDogs, the Yankton native has compiled a 4-0 record with a 1.54 earned run average this summer. Somsen has struck out 41, walked 12 and allowed only 16 hits in 35 innings pitched.

Two other Jackrabbit pitchers who completed their freshman seasons with the Jackrabbits this spring were selected to play in the July 11 Pacific West Baseball League All-Star Game. Adam Bray represented the Top Speed Baseball team, while Chad Hodges represented the Auburn (Calif.) Wildcats.

Bray, a native of Eden Prairie, Minn., has posted a 5-1 record with a 1.34 earned run average in seven games. In 40 1/3 innings pitched, Bray has struck out 46 batters, walked 10 and surrendered only 28 hits.

Hodges, from Medicine Hat, Alberta, has appeared in eight games — four starts — and has recorded a 2-1 record to go along with two saves and a 2.49 ERA. He has fanned 23 hitters in 25 1/3 innings.

Joining Hodges on the all-star team was battery mate, catcher Reid Clary. A native of Princeton, Ill., Clary redshirted during the 2012 collegiate season after transferring from Illinois-Springfield. During the summer season, Clary is batting .323 with 11 runs batted in for Auburn.
