Jacks win opener at Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- The South Dakota State University women's swimming and diving team won nine of thirteen events to defeat Northern Iowa 139-104 to start the 2012-13 season.

The 400-yard medley relay team of Lisa Newberger, Kayce Smith, Trina Young and Devonne Dalin captured the first victory of the year for the Jackrabbits with a time of 4:05.48.

Junior Andrea Budahl won two individual events. Budahl won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.31 and the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.88.

Junior Emma Gaulke-Janowski won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:43.40.

Senior transfer Devonne Dalin won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.92 seconds. Kaylin Caron finished second in 25.14 seconds.

The Jackrabbits took the top three spots in the 200-yard individual medley. Freshman Bianca Ninneman won with a time of 2:16.73, Kayce Smith second in 2:16.82 and Emma Wright third in 2:17.62.

Sophomore Trina Young won the 100-yard butterfly in 59.64 seconds.

Sophomore Nicole Grimit won the 100-yard freestyle in 54.07 seconds. Devonne Dalin finished second in 54.16 seconds.

Freshman Kayce Smith won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.50. Freshman Paige Weisz finished second in 1:11.19.

Freshman driver Olivia Olesiak finished second in the one-meter dive with a score of 209.75 points and fourth in the three-meter dive with a score of 178.42 points.

The Jackrabbits will be back in action Saturday at Iowa State.
