Wildcats too much for Jackrabbits

Minneapolis – The South Dakota State University women’s basketball team began their season Saturday afternoon with a loss against Villanova by a score of 71-47.

The Jackrabbits struggled throughout the game as they committed 18 turnovers, while the Wildcats only turned the ball over 11 times. SDSU could not find their stroke from the field as they shot 34.6 percent in the first half. The Wildcats controlled the half as they made six three-point shots.

Megan Waytashek found success in the first half as she led the Jackrabbits with nine points. The Jackrabbits kept the game within ten points for the first ten minutes before being outscored 18-9 to end the half. SDSU trailed 44-25 going into the second half. The Jackrabbits began the second half with a 11-2 run.

They were able to get the deficit within ten at the 14 minute mark, but he Wildcats responded with a 25-11 run to end the game. Ashley Eide ended the day with 11 points, while Gabrielle Boever led the team with seven rebounds. That is a career best for Boever. Boever led the team with 28 minutes played.

The Wildcats were able to score from long range all game as they made nine three point shots. Villanova was also able to capitalize off of turnovers as they scored 14 points via a Jackrabbit turnover. The Jackrabbits finished the game shooting 35.4 percent. 

Laura Sweeney had 24 points for the Wildcats, 16 of them coming in the first half.

SDSU drops their season opener, but will be back tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. against the Washington State Cougars.

Washington State lost to Minnesota. Minnesota will be playing Villanova tomorrow at 1 p.m. 

The Jackrabbits are 2-0 all-time against the Cougars. This was the first ever meeting between the Jacks and the Wildcats.
