The nine head coaches were selected after a nomination period for individuals who utilized social media effectively to market his respective wrestling program, all while building a personal brand.
Coach Bono guided the Jackrabbits on the mat, in the classroom and via social media. SDSU wrestling built its pedigree on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube through the use of its highly recognizable hashtag: #GetJacked. The phrase influenced Coach Bono’s weekly coach’s show, “Jacked Up! Mondays,” and is also prominent on Jackrabbit wrestling merchandise. Bono also created the persona SDSU Blue Man, an unofficial representative of the team who also developed a social media personality (@SDSUblueman), as well.
The award winners are determined by a panel of judges assessing annual performance (60 percent) and an online voting competition by fans (40 percent).
The voting period for the Head Coach category opens Monday, June 10 at 7 a.m. and ends Friday, June 14 at 10:59 p.m.
ELSM is scheduled to announce the winner on Wednesday, June 19 at 7 p.m. via its Twitter username (@ELSMarketing). Winners receive a custom-framed awards poster and will be honored in a feature story on the ELSM and NWCA websites. Individuals will be recognized at the NWCA Convention in August, as well.
