SDSU finishes 11th in season opener
NORMAL, Ill. -- The Jackrabbit women's golf team wrapped up the first tournament of the 2013-14 season on Tuesday with an 11th place finish at the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State.
SDSU fired rounds of 313 and 306 and was tied for 8th place after play on Monday. The Jacks posted a 322 in the final round on Tuesday, dropping to 11th place.
The second round score of 306 is the fifth-best in SDSU history.
Sydney MacDonald led the young Jackrabbit squad, posting the best 36-hole (151) and 54-hole scores (230) of her career at the 6,051-yard, par-72 Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State. The sophomore finished tied for 22nd place, the third top-25 finish of her short career, with rounds of 75, 76 and 79.
Freshman Hallie Getz finished tied for 36th place with a final score of 235 at her first collegiate tournament. The Pierre, S.D., native carded rounds of 79, 76 and 80.
Islamiah Fuad posted scores of 80, 79 and 81 to finish with a three-round total of 240. The freshman from Perak, Malaysia, tied for 55th place to open fall play.
Freshman Megan Mingo shot rounds of 85, 75 and 82 (242) to finish tied for 60th place and sophomore Brianna Janu tied for 67th place with scores of 79, 82 and 84 (245).
Competing unattached, junior Alli Plath carded scores of 79, 77 and 81 (237) and finished the tourney tied for 44th place. Plath posted some personal bests in her first action as a junior. Her score of 77 in the second round ties a career low 18-hole score. The 36-hole total of 156 and 54-hole score of 237 are the best of her career.
Toledo took home the team championship by 12 strokes over Ball State. Toledo posted scores of 297, 295 and 298 for a tournament total of 890.
Ball State's Jenna Hague was the tournament champion with scores of 72, 70 and 73 (215) to edge out Bowling Green State's Lily Bartell by one stroke (69-71-76-216).
The Jackrabbits next compete at the second annual Jackrabbit Fall Invitational, held at the Minnehaha Country Club in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Sept. 23-24.
