DES MOINES, Iowa – The South Dakota State women’s soccer team defeated Drake 1-0 on Friday night at Cownie Soccer Complex. Diana Potterveld’s goal in the second half proved to be the game-winner.

The first half ended quietly for both teams as they combined for 11 shots. The Jackrabbits only registered one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes. Nicole Inskeep kept the Bulldogs under control as she saved both shots she faced.

Madison Yueill came off the bench in the 30th minute and 15 minutes later she recorded the lone shot on goal of the half.

It took SDSU seven minutes into the second half to break the scoreless tie. Delaney Ratcliffe found Diana Potterveld outside the box and Potterveld delivered for her first goal of the year.

Within 12 minutes after Potterveld’s goal the Jackrabbits added five more shot attempts. Andrea Swanson and the Bulldogs’ defense kept the Jackrabbits from adding to their lead.

Stacy Guijarro had two shot attempts within a 25 second window, but the Drake defenders blocked both attempts.

With 12 minutes to go in the game, Inskeep and the Jackrabbit defense came up with their biggest save of the night. The Bulldogs placed a corner kick into the box and Megan Fisher made an attempt on goal. The SDSU defense stopped the ball before it crossed the line and they avoided a Bulldog goal.

Drake continued to test SDSU in the final minutes as Kayla Armstong’s shot went wide with eight minutes to play.

“It is always a tight game against Drake, they always come to play against us," noted head coach Lang Wedemeyer. “It was nice to have a little luck go our way.”

The Jackrabbits’ offense came alive in the second half as they outshot the Bulldogs 12-8.

SDSU improves to 3-2-2 on the year, while Drake falls to 0-5-2.

Inskeep’s shutout on the day is her fourth of the year. Her fourth shutout ranks ninth all-time for shutouts in a season.

SDSU will continue their Iowa road trip on Sunday as they travel to Wateloo, Iowa to face Northern Iowa. The Jackrabbits and Panthers will play Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
