Jackrabbits and Panthers clash in Cedar falls
Fresh off its first Summit League match of the season, the South Dakota State volleyball team plays its final non-conference match of the season on Tuesday, when the Jackrabbits travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to take on perennial Missouri Valley Conference power Northern Iowa at 6 p.m.
The Jacks, who open the home schedule on Friday in a return to league play, started Summit League play with a 3-1 loss at North Dakota State on Saturday in Fargo, N.D.
The Last Time Out; at North Dakota State; Sept. 28 – FARGO, N.D. – Wagner Larson finished with 20 kills and hit .405 (20-3-42) in South Dakota State’s Summit League opener at North Dakota State on Saturday, but four Bison players posted double figure kills in a 3-1 North Dakota State victory in Fargo, N.D.
The loss, by the set scores of 19-25, 18-25, 26-24 and 19-25, drops the Jackrabbits to 2-11 on the season overall and to 1-0 in league play, while the Bison improve to 1-12 overall and to 1-0 in the league. Despite the loss though, head coach Phil McDaniel did see some positives in the match.
In addition to Larson and her 20 kills, the Jacks got nine kills each from Tiara Gibson and Mikala Hora. Gibson hit .438 (9-2-16) and added a solo block and two block assists. Palmer led the defense with 16 kills, while Lexi Fowler posted a double-double with 44 set assists and 14 digs.
Jenni Fassbender led the Bison attack with 23 kills, Emily Minnick added 15, Emily Miron 13 and Dani DeGagne 12 kills in the win. Emily Milligan led NDSU with 21 digs, with Danielle Dombeck adding 19.

FOWLER CLIMBS CAREER SET ASSISTS CHARTS – Senior setter Lexi Fowler started her senior season ranked ninth all-time at SDSU with 1,897 career set assists, but moved up one spot to eighth, and enters the match with 2,227 for her career, 320 shy of passing Melia Iwamoto (2,546 set assists from 2007-08) for seventh on the all-time list.
FOWLER RECORDS A TRIPLE-DOUBLE – Senior setter Lexi Fowler posted her first-career triple-double in a 3-2 win at Drake on Sept. 7, with 12 kills, 48 set assists and 14 digs. Fowler becomes the first Jackrabbit to score a triple-double since Amy Anderson accomplished the feat in a 3-0 win over Western Illinois at The Summit League Championships on Nov. 16, 2007, when she finished with 11 kills, 10 digs and 10 total blocks.
THIS WEEK’S OPPONENT
Northern Iowa Panthers (9-5, 2-1 Valley) – A regular atop the Missouri Valley standings and in the NCAA Tournament, UNI opened the season with a win, but dropped its next four matches for a 1-4 start to the season. The Panthers then responded with seven straight wins, starting with a 3-0 sweep of No. 17 Louisville and ending with a 3-1 win at Loyola in their conference opener.
The Panthers then split their opening conference weekend at home last week, falling 3-1 to Wichita State on Friday, before downing Missouri State by a 3-2 score on Saturday.
The Series vs. Northern Iowa – The Panthers lead the all-time series 5-0.
The Last Meeting: Oct. 9, 2012; Cedar Falls, Iowa – South Dakota State took a set from perennial Missouri Valley power Northern Iowa, but eventually came up on the short end of a 3-1 match against the Panthers, who won by the set scores of 25-13, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-15.
Kelli Fiegen led the Jackrabbits with 12 kills, adding a match-high six total blocks. Kaitlin Klingemann finished with 11 kills and a pair of blocks for the Jacks, who finished with 10 total team blocks.
Macy Ubben led four Panthers in double figures with 15 kills. Amy Braun added 14, Krista Degeest 13 and Shelby Kintzel 10 kills and five block assists in the win. Braun added 15 digs to complete the matches only double-double.
Candice Burke led the UNI defense with 31 digs.
NEXT UP FOR THE JACKRABBITS – SDSU returns home to open the home schedule on Hobo Day Weekend, starting with Denver on Friday, followed by a Hobo Day contest against South Dakota on Saturday. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
