Men's tennis competes at SIU Fall Classic
CARBONDALE, Ill. -- South Dakota State took on a pair of foes from the Prairie State Saturday afternoon as the Jackrabbits competed against Southern Illinois University and Eastern Illinois University. There were no official team scores recorded because of the hidden dual format that was in play.
"The boys played well in their first dual setting of the year," head hoach Michael Engdahl said. "Once we find the right mental appraoch for each person, we are going to turn from a good team into a spectacular team."
In singles action, Henrique Pereira and Gary Notkin were the lone Jackrabbits to pick up wins on the day, as they both went 2-0. Pereira defeated SIU's Filip Aleksic 6-1, 6-1 and EIU's Grant Thompson 6-2, 6-5, while Notkin bested SIU's Rafael Cuadril 6-2, 7-5 and EUI's Kevin Bauman 0-6, 6-2, 10-5.
"Gary and Henrique really stepped up their singles game," Engdahl said. "They were able to weather the storm from their opponents and played smart tennis."
"Overall it was a successful weekend; one we will definitely learn from," Engdahl said.
SDSU will close out its fall season Oct. 17-20 at the ITA Regionals in Tulsa, Okla.
