The South Dakota State cross country teams are traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind., to compete in the 2013 Summit League Cross Country Championships this weekend. The men won the 2012 meet and the women place third last year.

Fort Wayne is the host of the 2013 Summit League Cross Country Championships. The conference meet is held at Hefner Fields in Fort Wayne, Ind. The men’s 8k race starts at 11 a.m. (EDT) and the women will run a 6k at noon (EDT).

There are six teams competing on the men’s side and seven teams in the women’s race.

The men will be defending their title from last year. The Jackrabbits have won three Summit League titles in four years. Trent Lusignan (first team) and Joel Reichow (second team) were named to the all-conference teams last year.

Lusignan placed third last year and he took ninth the year before. Reichow finished tenth at last year’s meet.

Cheyanne Bowers is the top-finisher returning from last year’s squad. She finished 17th overall with a final time of 23:06.3. Courtney Neubert crossed the finish line less then seconds (29:06.2) after Bowers to place 18th.

Lusignan ran a time of 23:49.65 at the Pre-Nationals meet to take 19th overall. The Jackrabbits finished 29th out of 52 teams at the Pre-Nationals meet.

The women’s team ran at the Bradley Classic two weeks ago. Bowers led the Jackrabbit pack with her final time of 21:31. She placed 14th overall at the meet. All 12 Jackrabbit women set personal best times in a 6k race at the Bradley meet.

After starting the year being ranked No. 12, the Jackrabbit men have moved up to the No. 11 spot in the Midwest Region according to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Reichow was named The Summit League’s Athlete of the Month for Aug./Sept. and The Summit League’s Athlete of the Week twice. Lusignan has won three Athlete of the Week awards three times this year.

The Jackrabbits will not compete next weekend as they prepare for the NCAA Midwest Regionals on Nov.15. The Midwest Regionals are hosted by Iowa State in Ames, Iowa.
