Volleyball falls in first-ever match at Denver
DENVER, Colo. – The South Dakota State volleyball team played its first-ever Summit League match at Denver on Sunday, but came out on the losing end, falling to the Pioneers 3-0 by the set scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-16.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 3-20 on the season overall and to 1-9 in The Summit League, while Denver improves to 13-11 overall and to 7-4 in the league.
“This has really been a roller coaster of a season for us. We’ll play well for stretches, and then at times look disjointed on the court,” head coach Phil McDaniel said. “We have to learn how to come out of valleys in the season faster and ride the peaks longer.”
Tiara Gibson led the Jackrabbits with seven kills and added a block assist. Wagner Larson finished with five kills and led the Jacks with two block assists. Kacey Herrmann posted three kills and led the Jacks with 10 digs.
Denver’s Nola Basey and Brea Muhle led all players in the match with 10 kills, while Kate Acker led the Pioneer defense with 12 digs. Basey added six digs, while Muhle finished with five total blocks; four block assists and one solo block.
The Jackrabbits return home to close the home schedule next weekend, when they host Omaha on Friday and Western Illinois on Saturday, when the team also honors its lone senior Lexi Fowler. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
