AMES, Iowa – The Jackrabbit men’s cross country team made history on Friday afternoon as Trent Lusignan qualified as the first Jackrabbit in the D-I era to make the NCAA D-I Cross Country Championships. Lusignan added to his stellar junior year as he placed second overall at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Lusignan clocked in for a final time of 30:30.3. As a team, the Jackrabbits finished 10th overall at the meet.

Lusignan’s 10k time is a new personal best for him as he set the highest finish for an SDSU runner at the Midwest Regional meet. He also tied The Summit League’s highest finish at any regional race.

"It’s better than what I was expecting," noted Lusignan on his second place finish. "I didn’t think I could take second at the regional, who knows where I will be next weekend. Like I showed today, I am better than I think I am.”

“It was a very exciting race, he ran tremendously smart and made the move when he had to break things up and secure himself a position," noted head coach Rod DeHaven on Lusignan’s second place finish. "He showed a lot of savvy and poise, it is a nerve racking thing to not only lead your team, but to run against a bunch of other guys at a high level, guys that are national collegiate record holders, guys that are going to run on Olympic teams for their countries.”

“To get second in this meet is a great accomplishment and it is a huge accomplishment to make the national meet as an individual as it is not an easy thing," stated DeHaven.

On the team as a whole DeHaven said, “We ran solid today, we didn’t knock it out of the park, but we did alright. I think we can build on that a lot of the guys in this race will join us again in the future.”

One of two seniors on the team, Anthony Bongard ran to a 57th place finish with his final time of 31:33.8. Joel Reichow was right behind Bongard as posted a final time of 31:35.5 to finish 58th overall. Reichow cut almost 40 seconds off his personal best in a 10k race (32:10.65).

Freshmen Brendan Sage and Trevor Capra made their collegiate 10k debuts today. Sage finished in 90th with his final time of 32:17.3, while Capra took 127th with an overall time of 32:46.1.

Cutting three seconds off his personal best (33:06.03) in a 10k race, Andrew Thies clocked in at 33:03.03 to take 141st.

Christian Karels, along with Bongard ran in his final race in yellow and blue. Karels finished 156th with his final time of 33:28.1; Karels’ time on the afternoon is a new personal best for him.

The Jackrabbits took 10th overall with 328 points. SDSU was the top Summit League school as South Dakota placed 12th with 352 points and North Dakota State tallied 479 points to place 20th.

Lusignan is set to compete at the NCAA D-I National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. The men’s 10k will take place at noon (EST) on Nov. 23.
