Jacks Fall to Florida Gulf Coast

PUERTO VALLARTA, MEXICO – Florida Gulf Coast (4-3) sank 12 three-pointers to help it to an 84-59 win over South Dakota State (4-4) in women’s basketball action Friday at the Puerto Vallarta Hardwood Tournament of Hope.

The Eagles shot 46.2 percent from beyond the arc, making 12 of 26 treys. They also shot 50.8 percent from the field.

Florida Gulf Coast had four players scoring in double figures, led by Stephanie Haas with a game-high 18 points. Jamie Gluesing scored 16 points and had four three-pointers, while Sarah Hansen and Whitney Knight scored 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The Jackrabbits were led by junior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) with 13 points, freshman Kerri Young (Mitchell) with 12 points and junior Gabby Boever (Worthington, Minn.) with a season-best 10 points. Senior Hannah Strop (New Prague, Minn.) led the Jacks with a seven rebounds.

Building upon a 48-32 halftime lead, Florida Gulf Coast opened the second half with a 14-5 run to take a 25-point lead, 62-37, with 11:57 left in the game. The Jacks never got closer than 23 points the rest of the game.

In the first half, the Eagles took a 24-9 lead with a 16-4 run. FGCU hit four of its nine first-half three-pointers during the run. SDSU responded with a 14-5 run to cut the lead to eight points, 31-23, when Young scored five of her 10 first-half points. Florida Gulf Coast turned in a 12-2 run to push its lead to 18 points, 43-25, with 3:01 left. The Jackrabbits outscored the Eagles 7-2 in the final 2:48 to trail by 16, 48-32, at halftime.

The Jackrabbits return to the friendly confines of Frost Arena Monday when they host NJIT at 7 p.m.
