Jacks Host NIU in Final Home Game of 2013

             After 277 Division I games, the South Dakota State women’s basketball team (8-4) plays for its 200th DI win Tuesday as its hosts Northern Illinois (4-3) at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.

            The Jackrabbits own a nine-game home winning streak, dating to last season, and a modest four-game winning streak after winning the battle of mid-major powers against Central Michigan, 87-82, Dec. 15.

            The Huskies have been idle since beating Illinois State, 57-52, Dec. 5.

            South Dakota State is ranked 20th in the latest CollegeInsider Mid-Major poll.

-South Dakota State plays the final game of its second three-game homestand of the season Tuesday. It went 3-0 in November, beating Georgetown, Northern Iowa and Pepperdine, and is 2-0 during the December homestand.

-The Jackrabbits will be protecting a pair of streaks Tuesday. They own a nine-game home winning streak and a modest four-game winning streak. Northern Illinois has won its last two games, but is 1-3 on the road this year.

-The Redbirds make their first trip to the state of South Dakota.

nSDSU enters the contest holding opponents to just 64.3 points per game at home. Northern Illinois averages 56.2 points per game on the road.

A Quick Glance at South Dakota State

-Head coach Aaron Johnston’s probable starters vs. Northern Illinois are senior Hannah Strop (3.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg), junior forward Mariah Clarin (8.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg), junior guards Megan Waytashek (12.7 ppg, 4.2 rpg), Gabrielle Boever (6.2 ppg, 3.4 apg) and senior guard Steph Paluch (10.3 ppg, 2.0 apg). The lineup sports a 7-4 record.

-Waytashek has scored in double figures in nine of 12 games, and seven other Jacks have posted double-digit scoring games. Waytashek, junior Megan Stuart and freshman Kerri Young have SDSU’s only 20-plus point games this season. Clarin recorded the Jacks’ second double-double with 13 points and 15 rebounds at Wis.-Green Bay Dec. 7.

-SDSU is shooting 41.2 percent from the field, 36.1 percent from three-point range and 70.9 percent from the free-throw line. The Jacks are also averaging 71.1 points per game and limiting opponents to 67.1 points per game.

-The Jacks have a deep squad with nine players averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Their bench averages 29.7 points per outing this season.

Northern Illinois

-Northern Illinois is 4-3 on the season and have a two-game winning streak after beating Illinois State in Bloomington, 57-52, Dec. 5. They have been idle since the win.

-The Huskies were picked to finish sixth in the Mid-American West Division after posting records of 7-23 overall and 2-14 in the league last year.

-Northern Illinois has two players averaging double figures in scoring. Junior guard Amanda Corral leads the team in scoring (14.1) and classmate Natecia Augusta is scoring at a 10.6 clip and grabs a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game. Junior guard Danny Pulliam dishes a team-best 3.1 assists per game.  

-The Huskies are shooting 39.9 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from three-point range and 64.8 percent from the free-throw line.

-Northern Illinois returns two starters, seven letterwinners, and adds seven newcomers.

-It will be the third meeting between SDSU and Northern Illinois. The Jackrabbits hold a 2-0 series lead.

Northern Illinois Series

-Tuesday’s game marks the third meeting between South Dakota State and Northern Illinois in women’s basketball. The Jackrabbits hold a 2-0 series lead. 

-In last year’s game on Nov. 21, SDSU beat Northern Illinois, 59-58 in DeKalb. Leah Dietel and Gabby Boever had season highs of 13 and 12, respectively, to lead South Dakota State.

-The Jacks won the first meeting, 67-42, Dec. 4, 2004, in DeKalb. Brooke Dickmeyer led three Jackrabbits in double figures with a team-high 17 points. Andrea Verdegan came off the bench to score 14 points and Shannon Schlagel had 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds. South Dakota State sank 12 three-pointers in the game with Dickmeyer sinking four and Schlagel three.
