Five Jacks advance at Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Five Jackrabbits will wrestle tomorrow at the Southern Scuffle as Eric Orozco (141), Cody Pack (157), Joe Brewster (165), Trey Hable (197) and J.J. Everard (285) all survived the first day of competition. As a team, South Dakota State sits in 12th place with 26 points following day one.

"We're excited to have five guys going tomorrow," head coach Chris Bono said. "We need to be ready to go in the morning and are looking for all five to place."

The trio of Orozco, Pack and Everard each began the Scuffle 2-0, but dropped their respective championship round-of-16 bouts, while Brewster and Hable won their consolation round 3 wrestleback matches to advance.

Orozco dropped a 12-4 major decision to No. 4 Chris Dardanes (Minnesota) and will face Jeff Canfora (Pennsylvania) tomorrow. Pack fell to No. 11 Brian Realbuto (Cornell) in 5:31 and will wrestle No. 18 Tristan Warner (Old Dominion) tomorrow. Everard dropped a 6-3 decision to Blake Herrin (American) and will face Adam Robinson (Central Michigan) tomorrow.

After dropping an opening-round overtime match to Michael Staudenmayer (North Carolina), 4-2, Brewster won back-to-back wrestleback matches to advance to day two. Brewster recorded a major decision over Coleman Gracey (Army), 11-3 and defeated Rustin Barrick (Bucknell), 3-2. Brewster will face Casey Kent (Pennsylvania) tomorrow.

Hable dropped his opening bout to No. 15 Blake Rosholt (Oklahoma State), 6-4 before defeating Chace Eskam (Arizona State), 6-2. Hable will face off against Jace Bennett (Cornell).

Action will resume tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the championship quarterfinals and consolation round 4.
