State Bragging Rights On The Line Sunday

             State bragging rights will be on the line Sunday as the South Dakota State women’s basketball team (15-7, 6-0) hosts long-time rival South Dakota (11-10, 2-4) in the friendly confines of Frost Arena. Tipoff for the South Dakota Showdown Series game, presented by South Dakota Corn, is at 1 p.m. Midco Sports Net and Fox Sports Central will have live regional coverage of the game.

            Sporting the nation’s 13th-longest home win streak, the Jackrabbits sit atop the Summit League standings, and have a 13-game home win streak, dating to last season. They also have a six-game overall win streak after defeating Denver, 72-61, Thursday. Senior Steph Paluch led three Jackrabbits in double figures in scoring with a team-best 14 points.

            The Coyotes, currently tied for fifth place in the league with Western Illinois, enter Sunday’s game on a modest two-game win streak after defeating North Dakota State, 83-70, Thursday.

            SDSU is ranked 21st in the latest CollegeInsider Mid-Major poll.

-Sunday’s game is the first meeting between South Dakota State and South Dakota since the Jackrabbits beat the Coyotes, 56-53, in The Summit League Championship game in Sioux Falls March 12, 2013.

-Today, SDSU leads the league with a 6-0 record and will be playing for its best-ever start in the Summit League. The 2012-13 team opened league play 6-0 before losing at IUPUI Feb. 14, 2013. The best start in league play was the 2002-03 NCAA Division II national champion SDSU team that opened the North Central Conference schedule 8-0. The Jacks faltered at the University of North Dakota, 86-62, Feb. 6, 2003.

-SDSU is 3-0 in league play at home and is 10-0 in Frost Arena this season.

-South Dakota State is 38-6 all-time (.863 winning percentage) in Frost Arena in Summit League contests. The last time it lost a league home game was vs. IUPUI Jan. 19, 2013.

-The Jackrabbits are 22-8 vs. the Coyotes at home, winning the last 18. USD’s last win in Brookings was Feb. 23, 1990, winning 58-57.

-South Dakota is 3-8 on the road this season and is winless in Summit League road contests. The last time the Coyotes won a road game this season was Dec. 31 at Valparaiso.

-SDSU enters the contest averaging 72 points per game in league contests while limiting its opponents to 60.5 points per game. The Coyotes average 75 points in Summit League games, and give up 78.2 points per outing.


-Head coach Aaron Johnston’s probable starters vs. South Dakota are senior Hannah Strop (3.3 ppg, 4.8 rpg), junior forward Mariah Clarin (8.0 ppg, 6.7 rpg), junior guards Megan Waytashek (11.5 ppg, 4.5 rpg), Gabrielle Boever (5.7 ppg, 2.7 apg) and senior guard Steph Paluch (9.8 ppg, 2.7 rpg). The lineup sports a 13-6 record.

nWaytashek has scored in double figures in 13 of 22 games, and seven other Jacks have posted double-digit scoring games. Waytashek, senior Steph Paluch, junior Megan Stuart and freshman Kerri Young have SDSU’s only 20-plus point games this season. Waytashek registered the Jacks’ third double-double of the season with 23 points and 13 rebounds at Western Illinois Jan.16. Clarin recorded the team’s first two double-doubles.

-SDSU is shooting 40.4 percent from the field, 32.1 percent from three-point range and 71.1 percent from the free-throw line. The Jacks are also averaging 67.8 points per game and limiting opponents to 65.3 points per game.

-The Jacks have a deep squad with eight players averaging at least 13 minutes per game. Their bench averages 29 points per outing this season.


-South Dakota is 11-10 overall and 2-4 in Summit League play. They are 3-8 overall and 0-3 in league play on the road this season. They snapped a four-game losing streak Jan. 25 with a 75-51 win vs. Omaha.

-In the Summit League preseason poll, USD was picked to finish third in the league behind SDSU and IUPUI. Junior guard Nicole Seekamp earned preseason first-team All-Summit League honors while senior forward Polly Harrington picked up second-team honors.

-South Dakota has three players averaging double figures in scoring. Seekamp leads the team in scoring (14.8). Junior guard Raeshel Contreras and Harrington are scoring 14.3 and 10.3 points per game, respectively. Seekamp, who missed five games with an ankle injury in late December, came off the bench vs. North Dakota State to score 13 points and dish five assists.

-Junior forward Lisa Loeffler grabs a team-high 7.2 rebounds while sophomore guard Tia Hemiller dishes a team-best 3.1 assists per game.

-The Coyotes are shooting 41.4 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from three-point range and 72.7 percent from the free-throw line.


-Sunday’s game marks the 74th meeting in women’s basketball, dating to a 35-26 Jackrabbit victory during the 1966-67 season - SDSU’s first season as a varsity program.

-Overall, the Jackrabbits hold a 51-22 series advantage, winning 32 of the last 35 meetings. SDSU won the first 14 games in the series before the Coyotes won 19 of 24 matchups between the 1977-78 and 1990-91 seasons. The Jackrabbits followed with 21 consecutive victories to start their recent run of success.

-SDSU had won six meetings in a row starting with an 87-63 victory in the championship game of the 2003 NCAA Division II North Central Regional at Frost Arena. However, that streak came to an end in 2012 as the two squads split the series in their first year together as members of The Summit League.

-The Jackrabbits currently have a three-game winning streak after sweeping the regular-season series and beating the Coyotes in The Summit League Championship game last year.

-Junior Megan Waytashek averages 14.6 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in her three games vs. South Dakota. She also is shooting 50 percent from the field, including 36.3 percent from three-point range. Classmate Gabby Boever averages 6.8 points and 2.4 steals per game in her five meetings with the Coyotes. She is shooting 48.2 percent from the floor, including 46.1 percent from beyond the arc.
