Bowers, Wirth claim victories at NDSU
FARGO, N.D. – Cheyanne Bowers and Mary Wirth both claimed titles Saturday, while numerous Jackrabbits also posted top-10 finishes at the Bison Open. Bowers ran a time of 10 minutes, 26.33 seconds to claim the 3,000-meter run, while cleared a height of 5 feet, 8 inches to win the high jump event.
The one-mile run featured five runners finish in the top-10 for SDSU. Megan West and Laura Lawton led the Jackrabbit pack with second- and third-place finishes. West and Lawton both set personal-bests in the one-mile run, as they ran times of 5:06.32 and 5:06.92, respectively. Samantha Anderson posted a final time of 5:10.11 to finish fourth.
S. Anderson (3:04.82) also ran to a third-place finish in the 1,000-meter run.
Carly Carper and Gina Fritz posted top-five finishes in both the 60- and the 200-meter dashes. Carper finished second overall in both events with her times of 7.80 and 25.46, while Fritz took fourth (8.00) and third (25.87).
Carper set a personal-best mark of 18-8 in the long jump event. Her mark today ties her for third all-time in the SDSU record books. Last week at the USD Alumni Meet Carper recorded a distance of 18-6 ½.
Jessica McDonald rounded out the top-10 in the 200-meter dash with her final time of 27.04.
In the 400-meter dash, three Jackrabbit runners posted top-10 finishes. Kala McDonald clocked in at 59.54 to lead the Jackrabbits with her fifth-place finish. Evelyn Klein and Lori Foltz finished back-to-back with their ninth- and tenth-place finishes. Klein posted a time of 1:00.78, while Foltz crossed the finish line in 1:00.96.
Erica Meyer placed second overall in the 600-meter run with her season-best time of 1:42.19.
Jenna Grossenburg placed third in the 3,000-meter run with her personal-best time of 10:34.76.
Cailyn Schreurs led the Jackrabbits in the 60-meter hurdles with her final time of 9.46.
Jenna Stephens jumped a distance of 35-8 ½ in the triple jump event as she placed eighth overall.
In the throwing events, Shelby Assmus posted two top-five finishes. Assmus went 44-1 ½ in the shot put (fifth) and 54-1 in the weight throw (fourth). Also in the weight throw, Amy Paulzine took second with her distance of 56-3 ¼.
In the final event of the meet, the 4x400-meter relay, SDSU had two relay teams place in the top-five.
The group of K. McDonald, E. Klein, Jacleen Patterson and G. Fritz combined for a final time of 4:04.63 to take fourth. The team of J. McDonald, L. Foltz, J. Eibs and L. Strait ran to a fifth-place finish with their time of 4:09.82.
The Jackrabbits split squads next Friday as they compete at the South Dakota Twilight and the Nebraska Tune-Up. Friday will be the final day of competition before The Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships (Feb. 28-March 1).
