Jackrabbits ready for conference championships

The South Dakota State track and field teams are on the road this weekend for The Summit League Indoor Track and Field Championships. The two-day meet (Feb. 28-March 1) is held inside the IPFW Athletics Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Meet:  


The action starts with the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles at 9:30 a.m. The track and field events begin at 3 p.m., with the women’s weight throw and the prelims of women’s 60-meter dash.


The heptathlon continues at 9:30 a.m., with the 60-meter hurdles. The women’s triple jump starts the field events at 11:30 a.m., and the track events begin with the running of the women’s one-mile run at 1 p.m. All times are Eastern.

There are five teams competing on the men’s side (IUPUI, NDSU, SDSU, USD, WIU) and seven teams on the women’s side (IPFW, IUPUI, NDSU, SDSU, UNO, USD, WIU).

Last Time Out:
The Jackrabbit sent squads to the USD Twilight and the Nebraska Tune-Up.

On the men’s side, Traxton Priebe set two personal best times at the Nebraska Tune-Up. He ran a personal-best time of 8.86 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and he also set a personal-best time of 51.95 in the 400-meter dash.

In the one-mile run, both Andrew Thies and Grant VanKeulen posted personal-best performances. Thies placed 15th with his final time of 4:21.73 and VanKeulen finished in 22nd-place with his overall time of 4:26.22.

On the women’s team, Gina Fritz posted two season-best times at the Nebraska Tune-Up. Fritz clocked in for a season-best time of 7.88 seconds in the 60-meter dash and she also recorded a personal-best time of 24.99 in the 200-meter dash. Her 200-meter dash time is the third-fastest in school history.

In the 3,000-meter run, four Jackrabbit runners finished in the top-10, including two personal-best performances. Megan West finished in the top-three with her final time of 10:10.21. The Jackrabbits claimed the eighth- through tenth-place spots. Alex Suhr, Cheyanne Bowers and Jenna Grossenburg went 8-9-10. Suhr and Grossenburg both recorded posted personal-best times as they clocked in at 10:22.89 and 10:24.13, respectively. Bowers ran a season-best time of 10:23.89.

2012-13 Conference Meet:
At last year’s indoor conference meet, the Jackrabbit men finished in fourth and the women posted a fifth-place finish.

Preseason Polls:
In the annual Summit League Coaches Preseason Poll, the Jackrabbit men were picked to finish third, while the women were selected for a fourth-place finish.

Next Up:
The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are held in Albuquerque, N.M., March 14-15. The top-16 individuals in each event and top-12 relay teams qualify for the meet.

The Jackrabbits begin their outdoor season campaign in late March when they travel to the Arizona State University Invite (March 28-29) and the Wayne State Invitational (March 29).
