Jacks open Summit League action

FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- South Dakota State opened Summit League action with a 1-1 weekend, as it fell to Fort Wayne, 4-3 and defeated Western Illinois, 6-1.

In its Summit League opener against Fort Wayne, Parker Lawley, Henrique Pereira and Mateus Moreira all picked up wins in singles after SDSU dropped the double's point. 

Lawley won 6-1, 7-5, while Pereira and Moreira won 6-2, 6-2 and 7-6, 6-3, respectively.

Gary Notkin and Lucas Pereira picked up the lone win for the Jacks in doubles, as the duo won 8-6 in the No. 3 slot.

SDSU broke into the win column against the Leathernecks, as it downed WIU, 6-1. 

"I was impressed with the way we bounced back after a tough loss," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Our doubles were much better and we didn't give the a look at making a comeback in singles."

SDSU swept doubles, as Lawkey/Andrea Boglic, Notkin/Moreira and the Pereira tandem all won their respective matches.

In singles, Lawley won 6-2, 6-1, while Lovro Curcija bounced back with a him, 6-4, 6-3. Both Pereiras, Moreira and Notkin also picked up wins.

SDSU returns to the courts next weekend with a pair of non-conference duals against Portland State and North Dakota.
