Softball sweeps doubleheader at Western Illinois
MACOMB, Ill. – The South Dakota State softball team snapped a season-long skid on Saturday by sweeping Western Illinois in Summit League action, winning the opener 7-3 and the nightcap 4-3.
The Jackrabbits end the day with a 7-17 overall record and improve to 2-3 in league play, while the Fighting Leathernecks fall to 16-12-1 overall and to 2-3 in the league.
Sammy Bingham opened the day with a single to centerfield, and then stole second before she scored the first of her two runs in the opener on an Allison Huffman single. Huffman came in to score in the next at-bat on an Elyse Eitel triple, the first of her career, which put the Jacks up 2-0 after one.
The Jacks got two more hits and capitalized on a Leathernecks error to score two more runs in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead, tacked on one more after a wild pitch in the third and got a Samantha Terry double in the fourth to take a commanding 7-0 lead after four innings.
The Leathernecks started to heat up in the sixth, and scored a trio of runs, but the rally fell short and the Jacks hung on for the 7-3 win.
Six different Jackrabbits recorded hits in the opener, with Bingham finishing 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored. Three different players knocked in runs, led by Terry and her two-run double.
Jennifer Sutton got the win in the circle to improve to 3-6 on the season. She struckout one and walked four in six innings of work.
SDSU trailed early in Game 2, but got a two-RBI double from Eitel and an RBI single from Emily Weber, the Jacks only two hits of the game, to take a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning.
Western cut the lead to 3-2 after five innings, but the Jacks got that run back in the sixth, capitalizing on an error, a wild pitch and a passed ball to go up 4-2 after six innings.
The Leathernecks did score one run in the bottom of the seventh, but Ashlyn Bender ended the game with one of her two strikeouts of the game to seal the win.
The Jackrabbits look to complete the series sweep on Sunday at noon.
