Sanderson goes out on top
FARGO, N.D. – Jake Sanderson ended his Jackrabbit track & field career right where he wanted to be, on the top of the podium. The senior from Aurora, S.D., claimed his first conference title in the triple jump event on the final day of the 2014 Summit League Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Standing to the right of him on the podium was his good friend and teammate Jeremiah Ary.
Sanderson won his first career Summit League triple jump title with his mark of 47 feet, 3/4 inch and Ary placed second with a distance of 46-11 1/2.
Last year at the 2013 outdoor conference meet, Sanderson and Ary placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Adam Halverson also claimed his first conference title Saturday. Halverson had the sixth-fastest time in the 400-meter dash heading into the final event. He won the league title with a final time of 48.63 seconds. Luke Leischner claimed the 400-meter dash title at the conference meet last year for the Jackrabbits.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Justin Carson claimed the runner-up spot with his personal-best time of 53.73. Carson now moves into ninth all-time in the SDSU record book.
The 5,000-meter run provided a lot of excitement for the Jackrabbits. SDSU placed three runners in the top-10 of the event. Freshman Brendan Sage placed fourth with a time of 14:59.36, Joel Reichow took eighth with an overall time of 15:15.15 and Drew Kraft recorded a time of 15:24.26 to place 10th.
Grant VanKeulen. VanKeulen took ninth with a final time of 3:59.57. led the Jackrabbits in the 1,500-meter run with his personal-best time of 3:56.13 en route to a fourth-place finish. Also placing in the top-10 of the 1,500-meter run was
The 4x100-meter relay team of Marc Husman, Bo Arnold, Joseph Bednar and LeAndre Kennedy posted a season-best time of 41.86 to place third. Their time today moves them into tie for sixth all-time in the SDSU record book.
Bennett Mercil just edged out fellow teammate Traxton Priebe in the finals of 110-meter hurdles. Mercil placed seventh with an overall time of 15.93 and Priebe clocked in at 15.94 to finish in eighth.
Freshman Bo Arnold tallied a fourth-place finish in the finals of the 100-meter dash with his time of 10.97. Also in the 100-meter dash, claimed the seventh spot with his time of 11.07.
Kory Kohlhof took ninth in the 200-meter dash with a final time of 22.80.
Ryan Swenson ran to a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run as he ran an overall time of 1:56.08.
In the final event of the meet, the 4x400-meter relay, the Jackrabbits placed third overall. The team of Carson, Halverson, Austin Johnsen and posted a season-best time of 3:15.98.
Overall, the Jackrabbits posted a final score of 146 points to place third.
