PRINCESS ANNE, Md.—For the first time since 2012, the South Dakota State volleyball team (3-1) has a winning streak after beating Fairleigh Dickinson (0-4), 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 25-23) Saturday in the Hawk’s Holiday Hullabaloo in the 5,500-seat Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md.

The Jacks went 4-0 at the Gonzaga Tournament in 2012 and enter their home opener next weekend on a modest three-match winning streak.

“I am very happy with our team effort this weekend. One hiccup during our first match, but we learned a great deal from that first match,” head coach Phil McDaniel said. “It will be nice to be home for the next two weekends and our team will need to give greater effort and sharpen our focus in order for us to have success in Frost.”

For the fourth consecutive match, freshman Ashley Beaner (Sioux Falls) led the SDSU attack with a match-high 11 kills. The right side hitter also collected four of the Jackrabbits’ 14 block assists.

Sophomore Kacey Herrmann (Rapid City) had 10 kills, classmate Tiara Gibson (Clear Lake) 8 kills and junior Wagner Larson (Sioux Falls) added 6 kills and a team-best 5 block assists. For the second consecutive match, Jacks hit over .300, hitting .310.

Defensively, SDSU was led by juniors Lizzie Palmer (Sioux Falls) and Alana Pengilly (Watertown) with 16 and 15 digs, respectively.

Sophomore Brooke Leetham (Westminster, Colo.) registered 25 assists and 6 digs.

SDSU makes its home debut Sept. 5 when it host the Jackrabbits Invitational in the friendly confines of Frost Arena. The Jacks play Stephen F. Austin at noon.
