Daniel Telford was selected as team most valuable player and added a pair of other accolades to highlight the South Dakota State University baseball team’s year-end awards.

A native of Newmarket, Ontario, Telford also claimed the Coaches Award and Big Stick Award after batting .410 with six home runs and 36 runs batted in during an all-Summit League season in 2013. Telford’s batting average and home run total led the team, as did his .680 slugging percentage, while his 36 RBI tied for the team lead. A first-team all-Summit League selection, Telford later was named MVP of the Summit League Championship, in helping lead the Jackrabbits to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance at the Division I level.

Pitcher Stephen Bougher and outfielder Scott Splett  each were honored with two awards. A senior right-hander from Papillion, Neb., Bougher shared Most Outstanding Pitcher honors and was one of three players to receive the Captains Award. Now pitching professionally for the Lincoln Saltdogs in the independent America Association, Bougher compiled an 8-2 record with a 2.86 earned run average in 2013, en route to finishing his career as the Jackrabbits’ all-time record holder for starts and innings pitched.

Splett received Newcomer of the Year and the team’s Gold Glove Award. A native of Apple Valley, Minn., Splett hit .288 with two homeruns and 32 RBI, while adding seven outfield assists and committing only two errors for a .982 fielding percentage after transferring from the junior college ranks.

Sharing the Most Outstanding Pitcher honor was Layne Somsen. The senior right-hander, who is now pitching in the Cincinnati Reds organization, finished the 2013 season with a 4-5 record despite posting a 1.87 ERA and striking out 91 batters in 91.1 innings. His lone save of the season came in the Summit League tournament-clinching game against North Dakota State.

Other recipients of the Captains Award were senior catcher Steven Autenrieth and senior third baseman Andrew Melton.

Sophomore closer J.D. Moore, who set a Jackrabbit single-season record with 13 saves in 2013 earned the squad’s Fireman Award. The right-hander from Mississauga, Ontario, struck out 38 batters in 31.2 innings with a 1.99 ERA.

Outfielder Paul Jacobson was honored with the Freshman of the Year Award after batting .293 with a home run and 20 RBI. The Dakota Dunes native also led the team with 10 stolen bases.

Rounding out the team award winners were outfielder Eric Danforth and Sam Pack, who both received the Mr. Hustle Award.

South Dakota State, coached by Dave Schrage, finished the 2013 season with a 35-24 overall record, highlighted by an appearance in the Eugene Regional of the NCAA Tournament.
