South Dakota State erased an 0-2 deficit to tie its match with IUPUI at 2-2 on Friday, but the visiting Jaguars hung on for the win in the final set to secure the 3-2 win in front of 409 fans at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits fall to 9-4 overall and to 2-1 in The Summit League with the loss, while the Jaguars, who won by the set scores of 25-16, 25-19, 19-25, 15-25 and 15-11, improve to 9-6 overall and 2-1 in league play.

"I'll put this loss squarely on my shoulders, I need to a better job making sure we're focused and playing with energy from 0-0," head coach Phil McDaniel said. "I thought our team responded well, but we just weren't in system enough in those first two sets.

Kaitlin Klingemann led the Jackrabbit offense with 15 kills, Kelli Fiegen added 13 and Bailey Philippot 10 kills in a losing cause. Kelly Herrmann finished 14 kills and 13 digs to complete the Jackrabbits only double-double.

"I thought Kelly did a great job tonight overall, and I thought she was very composed throughout the match," McDaniel said.

Shay Birath led the defense with 26 digs, while Margit Hansing finished with 11 digs to go along with her five kills.

Keley Hoefer led four Jaguars with double figure kills with a match-high 20. Bethany Folger added 15, Kaitlyn Hickey 14 and Moriah Fair 12 kills in the win. Fair also added 26 digs to complete the double-double.

Beth Howard led the IUPUI defense with 27 digs.

The Jaguars opened the match on a 3-0 run, and never looked back in winning the first set 25-16.

After a pair of early lead changes and three ties, the Jaguars broke a 5-5 tie with a 6-0 run and never trailed again in the second set. The Jacks would cut it to 16-15, but IUPUI answered with 4-0 run to secure the 25-19 second set win.

The Jacks came out hot in the third set and pulled away midway through the set to seal the 25-19 win and extend the match to a fourth set.

With the momentum on their side, the Jackrabbits slowly pulled away in the fourth set, and used a 4-0 run to go up 20-10 and secure the 25-15 win and force the fifth and final set.

In that final set, the Jacks opened with a service error and never seemed to find a groove. IUPUI broke a 2-2 tie with a 4-0 run to take command, and then held off a Jackrabbit rally to win the final set 15-11 and the match 3-2.

The Jackrabbits return to action on Saturday, when they host Western Illinois in Summit League action in Frost Arena at 7 p.m. The Fighting Leathernecks beat North Dakota State on Friday by a 3-2 score in Fargo, N.D.
