Seven South Dakota State University football student-athletes have been selected to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 Team, which was announced Thursday. All seven will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration later this month.
Three members of the Jackrabbit offensive line were named to the team. Senior Alex Olinger, a native of Ames, Iowa, earned a spot on the squad with a 3.99 grade-point average while majoring in pharmacy and biology, with junior starter Taylor Suess, Columbus, Neb., selected with a 3.95 GPA in mechanical engineering. Rapid City native Nick Purcell, a sophomore, also was named to the squad with a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in biology/pre-medicine.
SDSU swept the wide receiver spots with Brandon Hubert and Jason Schneider receiving honors. A junior from Gretna, Neb., Hubert carries a 3.61 GPA in pharmacy, while Schneider, a sophomore from Andover, Minn., has compiled a 3.98 GPA in pre-pharmacy.
Running back Zach Zenner earned SDSU's sixth — and final — selection on the offensive side of the ball. A sophomore from Eagan, Minn., Zenner not only leads the Football Championship Subdivision in rushing with an average of 166.2 yards per game, but he has posted a 3.78 GPA while majoring in biology and pre-medicine.
Rounding out the Jackrabbit honorees was senior defensive back Bo Helm. A senior from Childress, Texas, Helm has compiled a 3.47 GPA while majoring in biology.
SDSU's seven academic all-district selections were the most of any Division I program.
Selections to the Capital One Academic All-District 6 Team were determined by a vote of sports information directors in Arkansas, Iowa, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin. Candidates must be at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing, a starter or key reserve on his team and carry at least a 3.3 GPA.
