Jackrabbit volleyball signs three
South Dakota State head volleyball coach Phil McDaniel announced the signing of three players on Thursday, all of whom signed national letters of intent, indicating their plans to enroll at South Dakota State in the fall of 2013 and compete on the Jackrabbit volleyball team.
The three players include:
- Tiara Gibson - 6-3, MH, Clear Lake, S.D. (Deuel H.S.
- Mikala Hora - 5-10, OH, Yankton, S.D. (Yankton H.S.)
- Garet Miliner - 5-5, DS, Apple Valley, Minn. (Apple Valley H.S.)
"We're excited to welcome these three young ladies to the Jackrabbit volleyball team in 2013," McDaniel said. "The dedication that each of them have for athletics, academics and family makes them a great fit for our program and our university."
A three-year varsity letterwinner, Tiara Gibson finished her high school career with 707 kills, 416 digs, 321 total blocks and 143 services aces. She averaged 13 kills, six blocks and no fewer than five digs per match over the last two years and hit .300 as a junior and .370 as a senior.
In addition to her three letters in volleyball, Gibson earned three letters in basketball, four in track and field and one in cross country, earning numerous honors in all sports along the way.
Gibson played middle blocker for the South Dakota Volleyball Club 18s National Team.
Along with her athletic skills, Gibson also excelled in the classroom as a four-year honor roll student, a member of the National Honor Society and as a member of the National Art Honor Society.
Gibson joins older brother Taylor, a tight end on the Jackrabbit football team, at SDSU.
McDaniel on Gibson:
"T is a phenomenal athlete. She's strong, quick and powerful. She's also a solid student, and works just as hard in the classroom as she does on the court. We're happy that we are able to keep recruits with close ties to SDSU close to home."
A three-time first team all-state and all-conference selection, Mikala Hora earned all-conference honorable mention as a freshman team MVP honors in three of her four years on the team. She posted at least 300 kills per season in her sophomore through senior seasons and recorded a hitting percentage of at least .257 in those years, with a high of .331 as a junior.
In addition to volleyball, Hora earned four varsity letters on the Gazelle's basketball team and three as a member of the track team.
Off the court, Hora earned honor roll status from 2008-12 and a place in the National Honor Society in 2012.
McDaniel on Hora:
"Mikala is an explosive leaper with a heavy arm. She's an aggressive attacker with a good head for the game. "
Garet Miliner earned four varsity letters in high school, and served as a team captain as a senior in 2012. She plays club ball on Northern Lights, and won an AAU National Championship with them in 2012.
Off the court, Miliner made the 'A' honor roll in all four years of high school and is a three-year member of the National Honor Society. A 2009 Presidential Academic Award winner, she also won an Interscholastic Award three times.
McDaniel on Miliner:
"Garet is one of the quickest players that I will have coached. She sees the court very well, and is a solid defender. Her club experience will be valuable to her in her transition to collegiate play."
