The South Dakota State wrestling team sent wrestlers to the Jimmie Open and placed seven, including three champions.

Eric Orozco (133), Troy Morisette (174) and Trey Hable (184) all placed first at their respective weight classes.

Orozco competed in a round robin at 133 pounds and finished on top. He opened the day with a second-period pin versus Doug O'Hara (MSU-Northern) and won by 7-3 decision versus O'Hara's teammate Riley Miller. In the semifinal-of-sorts, Orozco won in a tie breaker -1 versus Coby Horner (Jamestown) 3-2 and, in essentially the championship bout, he topped Horner's teammate Edward Wilson by 5-2 decision.

Morisette also competed in a round robin and started and finished with close matches at 174 in his title quest. He opened with a 6-2 sudden victory - 1 win versus Jared Miller (MSU-Northern). Morisette's next two matches were heavily in his favor, as he pinned Casey Park (Great Falls-MT) in the third period and scored an 11-3 major decision versus Lane Oversen (Dickinson State). In the championship match of sorts, Morisette earned a tough 8-6 decision versus Conner Monk (MSU-Moorhead) for SDSU's second title.

Hable closed out the championships at 184 pounds, also a round robin, and in stunning fashion. He posted four pins en route to his title, all in the first period. Hable opened with pin versus Austin Werre (Jamestown) in 1:46 and followed it with a pin versus Werre's teammate Antonio Rivera in 0:55. In the fourth round, he added a pin versus Matt Beehler (MSU-Moorhead) in 1:29. The championship match pitted Hable versus teammate Hunter Weddington. Hable closed out his perfect day with a pin and the title. Weddington finished second.

In addition to Weddington, Will James (141) and Ben Schwery (165) also finished second.

James needed only one match to advance to the finals at 141, a bracket-style weight class. He scored a 3-1 decision versus Antonio Borden (Jamestown) in his opening match, the semifinal. In the first-place match, James wrestled hard but was on the losing end of an 8-6 decision versus Borden's teammate Dillon Kifer.

Schwery returned to the round robin format at 165 and finished the day 3-1. Schwery opened with a pin versus Jason Armitage (Dickinson State) in 2:25 and followed it up with a tech fall versus teammate Wesley Grew. After falling to Michael Nord (Jamestown), Schwery rebounded for a 7-1 decision versus Johnathon Gonzalez (Jamestown) in his final match to secure second place. Grew placed fifth.

Weddington won three matches before falling to Hable in the final round. Weddington matched Hable's feat versus Beehler (MSU-Moorhead) with a pin, but in the third period. He added decisions versus Rivera (Jamestown) and Werre (Jamestown) prior to the final round to place second.
