Volleyball team earns academic honor
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced on Wednesday that 622 teams, including South Dakota State, earned the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2012 season. This number once again breaks the previous year's total of 536, and sets a new all-time high for this award.
The Jackrabbits earned the award after posting 3.635 team GPA over the course of the 2012-13 academic year.
“Our players worked extremely hard on the court, and carried that same drive into the classroom,” head coach Phil McDaniel said. “We were above a 3.5 as a team after the fall semester, and I challenged our group to maintain that solid GPA for the spring semester, and they surpassed my expectations. I’m very proud of the level of excellence at which this group continues to achieve.”
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
