Women's golf tied for 8th in fall opener

NORMAL, Ill. -- The South Dakota State women's golf team is tied for 8th place at the Redbird Invitational after the first 36 holes of the 2013-14 season on Sunday.

The Jacks posted team scores of 313 and 306 at the 6,051-yard, par-72 Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State. SDSU is tied with Evansville at 619 strokes a piece.

Sydney MacDonald is leading the Jacks through 36 holes after firing rounds of 75 and 76 (151). The sophomore had three birdies in the opening two rounds and is tied for 20th place heading into the final round on Tuesday.

Hallie Getz is four strokes back and is tied for 33rd place with a day one total of 155. The freshman from Pierre, S.D., carded rounds of 79 and 76 in her collegiate debut.

Fellow freshmen Islamiah Fuad and Megan Mingo are also making their collegiate debuts for the Jacks.

Fuad, from Perak, Malaysia, posted scores of 80 and 79 (159) and is tied for 53rd place after the opening two rounds.

Mingo shot rounds of 85 and 75 (160) on Sunday. The Yankton, S.D., native is tied for 58th place.

Rounding out the Jackrabbit top five, sophomore Brianna Janu is tied for 63rd place after scores of 79 and 82 (161).

Alli Plath, competing as an individual, is tied for 37th place after day one of the tournament. The junior posted rounds of 79 and 77 for a day one total of 156.

Toledo is the top team on the leaderboard after play on Sunday, posting rounds of 297 and 295 (592) for a three-stroke lead over Bowling Green State (293-302-595).

BGSU's Lily Bartell is the top golfer at the tourney so far, with scores of 69 and 71 (140). Bartell holds a two-stroke lead heading into the third round.

The final 18 holes begins Monday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring is available on golfstat.com
