Balanced attack propels SDSU over UND, 6-1
The South Dakota State women’s soccer team won their non-conference finale against the University of North Dakota 6-1 on Sunday afternoon at Fishback Soccer Park. Six different Jackrabbits scored during the game.
Diana Potterveld started the offensive spark early for the Jackrabbits as she scored within 48 seconds of the opening whistle. Shelby Raper crossed the ball into the box from the right side of the field and a UND defender headed the ball out, but it fell right to Potterveld. Potterveld was alone on the left side of the box and she cashed in for her third goal of the year. She has scored in three of the past four games.
UND had a great look to tie the game in the 27th minute, but Zoe Foster’s shot hit the crossbar.
Eight minutes later UND responded to Potterveld’s goal. SDSU committed a foul in the box, setting up UND’s Kirsten Olson for a penalty kick. She converted on the penalty kick, which tied the game at one. The game remained tied for a few more minutes.
The Jackrabbits took a 2-1 lead over UND into halftime. They outshot North Dakota 9-5 in the first forty-five minutes, then the offense found their momentum in the second half as they tallied four goals on 10 shots.
SDSU didn’t take much time finding their groove in the second half as Megan Kingston scored in the 48th minute. Kingston’s goal against UND was the first of 2013 for her.
In the 56th minute the Jackrabbits capitalized on a penalty kick awarded to them. Alyssa Brazil took the shot on behalf of SDSU and scored her fourth goal of the year.
Delaney Ratcliffe scored her goal in a rare fashion. She scored via taking a corner kick. Ratcliffe setup for a corner kick in the 60th minute and with the aid of the wind the ball went into the back of the net.
The Jackrabbits tallied their final goal of the day on Madison Yueill’s set piece in the 77th minute. UND committed a foul outside of the box and set up a free kick for the Jackrabbits. Yueill took the free kick and put the ball past the keeper for her first career goal.
Four Jackrabbits scored their first goal of the year today. SDSU outshot UND 19-6, including 10-1 in the second half.
Robyn Wujkowski and Olson both tallied two shots each for UND. Kristi Hestdalen made five saves for North Dakota.
Hestdalen (55:58) and Brianna Ismale (73:02) both received yellow cards in the game.
Inskeep won her fifth game of the year and posted three saves in the contest.
SDSU will now turn their attention to Summit League play. “When you get into conference you can throw most of the results out the window,” noted head coach Lang Wedemeyer.” “It is a new season for everybody and we have to treat it that way. We can’t have mental breaks against conference teams.”
SDSU scored six goals in a game for the first time since they beat Omaha last year 6-1 in the 2012 regular season finale.
SDSU improves to 5-3-2, while UND falls to 1-8-1.
The Jackrabbits do not compete next week as they begin conference play on Oct. 4 at Western Illinois. SDSU will also travel to IUPUI on Oct. 6.
