Women's golf wins first-ever 54-hole DI tourney

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- The South Dakota State women's golf team captured the program's first 54-hole Division I tournament on Tuesday at the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational at Minnehaha Country Club.

The Jacks held a 15-stroke lead after 36 windy holes Monday, posting rounds of 317 and 318. SDSU scored a 315 in the final round Tuesday to seal the win by 11 strokes with a total of 950, tied for eight-lowest in SDSU's DI history.

Megan Mingo paced the young Jackrabbit squad, firing rounds of 80, 79 and 75 to finish tied for 3rd place, with four birdies along the way . The freshman's 54-hole score of 234 is a season and career-low and the Fall Invite marks the first top-25 and top-10 finish of the young Yankton-native's career. 

Sophomore Sydney MacDonald notched the first top-10 finish of her career at the 5,865-yard, par-71 course, finishing in 5th place. The Calgary, Alberta-native shot rounds of 77, 78 and 81 for a two-day total of 236. MacDonald carded four birdies during the tournament. 

Junior Alli Plath and freshman Islamiah Fuad tied for 13th place with 54-hole totals of 242, the best finish of each golfer's career. Plath posted rounds of 79, 84 and 79 and Fuad carded rounds of 85, 77 (season-low) and 80. Each golfer had three birdies over the tournament.

Hallie Getz posted the first top-25 finish of her career with rounds of 81, 84 and 81 for a total of 246. The freshman tied for 20th place and notched four birdies over 54-holes.

SDSU had four individuals competing unattached, with some good numbers in the mix.

Sophomore Brianna Janu earned her first top-10 finish with rounds of 80, 77(season/career-low) and 83. The Glenwood, Minn., native finished in 10th place, the best finish of her career, and carded three birdies over the course of the tournament for a two-day total of 240.

Amber Houser posted scores of 82, 83 and 81 to finish tied for 20th place. The junior had a three-round total of 246.

Sophomore Michaela Kouri had rounds of 83, 86 and 83 for a two-day total of 252 to finish in 32nd place.

Sophomore Myranda Dunmire finished in 36th place, shooting rounds of 81, 90 and 83.

NDSU was the runner-up in the team standings with scores of 317, 335 and 309, finishing 11-strokes behind SDSU with a tournament total of 961.

The tournament champion had be to decided by a playoff hole between NDSU's Sarah Storandt (74-82-76-232) and USD's Brenna Lervick(77-75-80-232). Lervick came out on top in the playoff, held on the 18th hole.

The second annual Jackrabbit Fall Invitational marks the first time in 11-year head coach Jared Baszler's career that both the men's and women's teams finished in first place while competing at the same tournament.

The Jacks are back in action next week, Sept. 30-Oct.1, at the UMKC Kangaroo Fall Invitational in Kansas City, Mo.
