A pair of newcomers win in Jackrabbit debut

OMAHA, Neb. -- In the final day of competition at the Omaha Invite, sophomore Lovro Curcija and junior Gary Notkin came away with wins in their respective finals.

"Lovro and Gary played well all weekend," head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Anytime you can win flights in these tournaments, it is big. It was great to see their Jackrabbit debuts end with first-place finishes.

Curcija, a transfer from the University of New Orleans, defeated North Dakota's Will Biemat 6-3, 6-1 to win flight D. Notkin, who came to SDSU by way of Wisconsin-Green Bay, defeated Northern Colorado's Jordan Laughnan 6-1, 6-2 to win flight F.

Other Jackrabbit's who were victorious on Sunday include, Mateus Moreira in flight B, Henrique Pereira in flight C, Lucas Pereira in flight D, Jonny Higham in flight E and Luis Duque in flight G.

On the women's side, Florencia Magni defeated Nebraska Omaha's Alex Tran 7-5, 7-6 (6) to claim fifth place in flight A. Tacy Haws-Lay defeated UNO's Jacqueline Baude 7-6, 6-4 in flight B.

"It was a great week to figure out what we need to work on moving forward," Engdahl said. "We figured out a lot of things and I know that everyone is ready to work this week to get ready for our tournament this weekend."

SDSU will host the Jackrabbit Invite this weekend, with action kicking off Friday afternoon.
