Volleyball falls in Hobo Day showdown
The South Dakota State volleyball team came out hot on Hobo Day against South Dakota in the South Dakota Corn Showdown Series on Saturday at Frost Arena, winning the first set 25-22, but the Coyotes came firing back to win the next three sets in order by the set scores of 25-15-25-20 and 25-18 to secure the 3-1 win.
The Jackrabbits fall to 2-14 overall with the loss, and to 0-3 in The Summit League, while the Coyotes improved to 13-6 overall and to 4-0 in league play.
“I thought overall we were better today than yesterday, and I think we were more focused and dialed in,” head coach Phil McDaniel said. “We got good production out of the middles tonight and it was good to see Kacey Herrmann and Mikala Hora be successful on the outside, but we need to cut down on the unforced errors moving forward.”
Herrmann and Hora combined 15 kills in the match; nine from Herrmann and six from Hora. Herrmann also added 11 digs and Hora a trio of blocks, two block assists and one solo block.
Lexi Fowler tallied her second double-double of the season with 37 set assists and with 12 digs, both of which led the Jacks in the loss.
USD’s Kendall Kritenbrink led all players and three Coyotes in double figures with 21 kills, adding 12 digs to complete the match’s only other double-double. Sydney Dimke added 13 kills and Kelsey Biltoft 11 kills in the win. Kaitlyn Hastings led all players with 14 digs in the match.
The Jackrabbits return to the road next week for matches at Western Illinois on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a match at Omaha on Sunday at 2 p.m.
