Volleyball closes home schedule this weekend

As the 2013 season winds to a close, the South Dakota State Volleyball team wraps up the home schedule this weekend with matches against Omaha on Friday and against Western Illinois on Saturday, when the Jackrabbits honor their lone senior Lexi Fowler on Senior Night. Both matches begin at 7 p.m., from Frost Arena.

Fans who plan on attending the Jackrabbit football team’s home finale against Indiana State on Saturday at 2 p.m., can use that ticket to get into Saturday’s Senior Night volleyball match for free. 

The Jacks return to action after dropping a pair of league matches last weekend, falling at South Dakota on Friday by a 3-1 score and coming up on the short end of a 3-0 match at Denver on Sunday.

The Last Time Out; at Denver; Nov. 3 – SDSU played its first-ever Summit League match at Denver on Sunday, but fell 3-0 to the Pioneers in a matinee by the set scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-16.

“This has really been a roller coaster of a season for us. We’ll play well for stretches, and then at times look disjointed on the court,” head coach Phil McDaniel said. “We have to learn how to come out of valleys in the season faster and ride the peaks longer.”

Tiara Gibson led the Jackrabbits with seven kills and added a block assist. Wagner Larson finished with five kills and led the Jacks with two block assists. Kacey Herrmann posted three kills and led the Jacks with 10 digs.

Denver’s Nola Basey and Brea Muhle led all players in the match with 10 kills, while Kate Acker led the Pioneer defense with 12 digs. Basey added six digs, while Muhle finished with five total blocks; four block assists and one solo block.

FOWLER CLIMBS CAREER SET ASSISTS CHARTS – Senior setter Lexi Fowler started her senior season ranked ninth all-time at SDSU with 1,897 career set assists, but moved up one spot to eighth, and enters the weekend with 2,493 for her career, 54 shy of passing Melia Iwamoto (2,546 set assists from 2007-08) for seventh on the all-time list.

FOWLER RECORDS A TRIPLE-DOUBLE – Senior setter Lexi Fowler posted her first-career triple-double in a 3-2 win at Drake on Sept. 7, with 12 kills, 48 set assists and 14 digs. Fowler becomes the first Jackrabbit to score a triple-double since Amy Anderson accomplished the feat in a 3-0 win over Western Illinois at The Summit League Championships on Nov. 16, 2007, when she finished with 11 kills, 10 digs and 10 total blocks. 

THIS WEEK’S OPPONENTS

Omaha Mavericks (6-19, 1-9 Summit) – Now in their final season in the transition to Division I, the Mavericks dropped a pair of home matches last week, falling 3-0 to IUPUI on Friday and 3-1 to Fort Wayne on Saturday. Omaha closes the season, and its D-I transition, next weekend at home against South Dakota and Denver. 

The Series vs. Omaha – The Mavericks lead the all-time series 34-18, but SDSU came out victorious in each of the last 13 meetings, starting with a 3-0 sweep on Sept. 29, 2000 in Omaha and running through a 3-1 SDSU win in the first meeting of the season. The last Maverick win in the series came in a five set affair on Nov. 13, 1999 in Omaha. 

The Last Meeting: Oct. 13, 2013; Omaha, Neb. – South Dakota State got a career-high 11 kills from Tiara Gibson and Lexi Fowler posted her team-high third double-double as the Jackrabbits snapped an eight match losing streak with a 3-1 win at Omaha on Sunday, winning by the set scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-14.

Gibson’s 11 kills led the Jacks, she also finished with six total blocks, one solo and a career-high five block assists in the win. Courtney Roberts and Mikala Hora both added nine kills, with Hora pitching in with 12 digs.

Lizzie Palmer tied with Fowler for team-high honors with 16 digs; Kacey Herrmann added 15 digs and Alanna Pengilly 12 .

Kelley Wollak led a pair of Mavericks with double figure kills with 13, adding 16 digs for a double-double, while Amy Taylor finished with 10 kills. Both Bailey Baxter and Michaela Schimmer also posted double-doubles in the loss; Baxter finishing with 18 set assists and 11 digs and Schimmer with 17 set assists and 14 digs.

Western Illinois Fighting Leathernecks (11-14, 5-5 Summit) – The Leathernecks split a pair of five set matches at home last weekend; downing Fort Wayne on Friday night, before falling to IUPUI on Sunday afternoon. Western, who plays at North Dakota State on Friday, wraps up the season at home next weekend against Denver and South Dakota.

The Series vs. Western Illinois – The Jackrabbits lead the all-time series 11-3, including a season sweep in 2012, when the Jacks won 3-1 at home on Sept. 22 and 3-1 on Oct. 19 in Macomb, Ill. The Leathernecks won the first meeting of the season 3-0 in Macomb, Ill.

The Last Meeting: Oct. 11, 2013; Macomb, Ill. – Freshman Tiara Gibson posted 10 kills and hit an impressive .769 with no errors in 13 attacks, but the team’s struggles continued on Friday night, as the Jackrabbits fell in three sets to Western Illinois, dropping the match by the set scores of 25-16, 25-16 and 25-21.

The lone Jackrabbit with double figure kills, Gibson also added four block assists, as SDSU finished with an 8-2 advantage in total team blocks.

Alanna Pengilly paced the Jackrabbit defense with a career-high 16 digs. Lizzie Palmer added 13 digs, Mikala Hora 11 and Kacey Herrmann 10 digs in the loss.

Western’s Ann Miller led all players in the match and a trio of Leathernecks in double figures with 19 kills, adding 12 digs to complete the double-double. Samantha Fournier added 13 kills and 15 digs for a double-double of her own and Heather Smith 11 kills.

Leatherneck setter Sarah Fetter also posted a double-double with 44 set assists and 11 digs.

NEXT UP FOR THE JACKRABBITS – SDSU closes the season on the road next weekend with matches at Fort Wayne on Friday and at IUPUI on Saturday. The Jacks and Mastodons get started on Friday at 6 p.m. ET, while the Jacks and Jags start at 4 p.m. ET.
