TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – South Dakota State’s Trent Lusignan claimed All-American honors on Saturday as he finished 12th overall at the Division I Cross Country Championships.

Lusignan finished the race with an overall time of 30:18.8. The 10k race was shortened by 110 meters due to standing water on the course.

“You couldn’t have scripted it any better," noted head coach Rod DeHaven on Lusignan’s race. “He moved though the race intelligently and it never looked like he was in trouble, it goes another half mile, who knows.”

“The game plan was to start out easy," said Lusignan. “I felt smooth, I was just working my way up and guys were falling back.”

Lusignan was in 61st place (8:39.8) at the 3k mark, but then he began to make his way towards the top. At the mid-way point he moved up 30 spots to 31st (15:01.7). The final 5k of the race was when he ascended to the leaders.

At the 8k point of the race Lusignan clocked in at 24:10.5, which moved him up to the 12th spot. He held put in the final 2k of the race as he finished 12th overall (30:18.8).

Lusignan’s 12th place finish on Saturday is the second highest in school history at the D-I Championships. Garry Bentley set the highest mark in 1973 when he placed eighth overall.

Lusignan becomes the first Jackrabbit Cross Country runner to garner All-American honors in the Division I era. Brad Lowery was the last All-American for the Jacks (2002 & 2003). Lusignan is also the 45th Jackrabbit Cross Country runner to be named an All-American.

With cross country now complete for the Jackrabbits, the first track and field meet is only a few weeks away. SDSU is set to open the track season at the Dakota Duals on Dec. 6 in Fargo, N.D.
