Mercil in tenth heading into Saturday's action
MINNEAPOLIS – A handful of Jackrabbit men competed on day one of the Minnesota Jack Johnson Invite. SDSU had three athletes post top-10 finishes on the day and Bennett Mercil is currently in 10th place in the heptathlon heading into the second day of action on Saturday.
He ended the day with a score of 2452, which puts him in 10th place with three events left on Saturday. He started the day with a time of 7.56 seconds in the 60-meter dash. In the long jump event, he collected a distance of 19 feet, 3 ¼ inches. His highest finish on the afternoon took place in the shot put. He posted a mark of 40-2 ¼ to place fifth in the event. In the final event on the day, the high jump, Mercil posted a height of 5-8 ½.
Tomorrow he will compete in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and the 1,000-meter run.
In the unseeded shot put event, Austin Benson claimed his first title as a Jackrabbit as he won the event with his distance of 51-5 ¾. Kyle Anderson placed ninth overall in the contest with his final mark of 44-8 ¾.
The Minnesota Jack Johnson Invite continues tomorrow morning with the men’s heptathlon 60-meter hurdles at 10 a.m.
