Four Jackrabbit men set personal bests on Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS – The South Dakota State men’s track and field team finished out the Minnesota Jack Johnson Invite with strong performances across the board. Four Jackrabbits posted personal bests on the day, including Cullen Mack who placed 13th overall in the weight throw.

Mack recorded a distance of 53 feet, 4 ½ inches in the weight throw. He set his old personal best (52-6 ½) last year at the 2013 Summit League Track and Field Championships.

Bennett Mercil finished out the heptathlon with a fifth place finish in the event. He started the day with a time of 9.26 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles. In the pole vault, he cleared a height of 12-6 ¼ to take third overall. In the final event of the competition, the 1,000-meter run, Mercil clocked in at 3:02.98. Overall, he tallied 4,345 points.

The 60-meter hurdles featured Jared Thomsen and Traxton Priebe. Thomsen ran a time of 8.79 to place 21st and Priebe crossed the finish line with a final time of 9.09 to take 30th.

After placing 14th overall in the 200-meter dash yesterday, Marc Husman placed 10th overall in the 400-meter dash today with his final time of 50.66.

Connor Berg posted a personal-best height of 6-5 in the high jump as he finished third overall.

The freshmen duo of Austin Johnsen and Ryan Swenson represented the Jackrabbits in the 600-meter run. Johnsen posted a personal-best time of 1:22.61 as he took 15th overall and Swenson placed 23rd overall with his time of 1:25.61.

The Jackrabbits had three runners finish in the top-15 in the 3,000-meter run. Kenny Mayer and Brendan Sage finished back-to-back in the race as they placed 12th and 13th, respectively. Mayer crossed the finish line with his time of 8:41.94 and Sage clocked in at 8:43.86. Andrew Thies rounded out the top-15 with his personal-best time of 8:44.94.

In the triple jump event, the Jackrabbits had two jumpers finish in the top-10. Jeremiah Ary and Jake Sanderson finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh with their marks of 44-6 and 44-1 ½.

Dylan Slaba was the lone Jackrabbit to compete in the 800-meter run, he posted a final time of 2:02.87 to place 34th overall.

In the pole vault, Nathaniel Schaefer cleared a height of 14-2 to place 15th overall.

LeAndre Kennedy posted the highest finish on the day for the Jackrabbits in the 60-meter dash. He clocked in for a time of 7.16 to place 20th overall in the event.

Joel Reichow and Daniel Pettit both posted top-25 finishes in the mile run. Reichow claimed 14th-place with his time of 4:19.92 and Pettit ran a time of 4:25.32 to finish 21st overall.

In the final event of the day, the 4x400-meter relay, four freshmen (Thomsen, Alex Wiemann, Johnsen and Husman) ran a time of 3:24.38 to place 10th in the event.

The Jackrabbits are at the Iowa State Bill Bergan Invite and the Minnesota State Open next weekend. The Iowa State Bill Bergan Invite is held in Ames, Iowa and the Minnesota State Open takes place in Mankato, Minn.
