BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State University men’s golf coach Jared Baszler announced Monday that Guillermo Andres Gonzalez will play for the Jackrabbits this spring season.

“Adding Guillermo to our roster mid-year can only help our chances of seeing improvement this spring season,” Baszler said. “He’s a very strong player that can hit the ball a long ways which will help him transition to the college game.  With only seven players on our roster we felt it was necessary to add some depth by adding Guillermo.  He is eager to get to work and contribute to the team as soon as possible.”

Currently ranked 20th nationally in Mexico, Gonzalez earned the Southeast Mexico Golf Association’s No. 1 ranking in the 2013-14 Southeastern Region by winning the Champion of Champions event. He also won the regional in 2011-12 and was third in 2012-13.

The Merida, Yucatan, native finished 30th, shooting a 72-79, at the Negra Modelo Mexican Pro Tour event and was 29th at the Yucatan Cup National Junior Tournament, shooting 80-73-80. As the youngest player in the championship flight, Gonzalez finished fourth in the Saltillo CC Annual Open, firing a 227.

Gonzalez spent the summer of 2011 at the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy in Florida, being named the champion at the Graduating Tournament.

The SDSU men’s golf team returns to action at the fifth annual Jackrabbit Invitational March 17-18, 2014, at Primm Valley Golf Course in Primm, Nev.
