Softball drops two at Cyclone Invite
AMES, Iowa – The South Dakota State softball team opened the 2014 season with a pair of losses at the Cyclone Invitational, hosted by Iowa State, falling 6-2 to Indiana State in the opener and then 3-0 to the host Cyclones in the afternoon.
The Jackrabbits end the day with an 0-2 mark, while the Sycamores ended the day with a 1-1 mark and the Cyclones 2-0 in the three team event.
The Jacks got on the board first in the opener, when Elyse Eitel hit a homerun over the centerfield wall on her first swing of the season in the top of the first inning.
SDSU added another run in the third inning to go up 2-0 on an Emily Utech sacrifice to third that scored Kelly Kleppin, but Indiana State countered with two runs in the bottom of the third and one more in the fourth, before sealing the win with a three-run fifth inning.
Eitel and Emily Weber both went 2 for 3 at the plate with a run scored in the loss.
Katie Lang took the loss in the circle in her first collegiate action. The freshman gave up six runs on seven hits, with eight walks and a pair of strikeouts in tossing a complete game.
Iowa State’s Rachael Hartman accounted for all three runs in the Cyclones 3-0 win in the Jacks in the second game of the day. She smacked a two-run homer in the second to put the Cyclones up 2-0, and then added a sacrifice fly in the fourth for the final run of the game.
Eitel again led the offense with a 3 for 3 effort at the plate, including a leadoff double in the fourth, but the Jacks could not push a run across.
Freshman Ashlyn Bender also saw her first collegiate action in the circle, giving up three runs on seven hits with two each in walks and strikeouts in taking the loss.
The Jackrabbits play the same two teams on Sunday, starting with the host Cyclones at 9:30 a.m., before wrapping up the weekend against the Sycamores at 2:30 p.m.
