Jackrabbit throwers win titles on Saturday

VERMILLION, S.D. – Amy Paulzine and Shelby Assmus each claimed individuals at the USD Alumni Meet on Saturday. Paulzine won the weight throw, while Assmus won the shot put event.

Paulzine bested her old personal mark in the weight throw in the process of winning on Saturday afternoon. At USD, Paulzine tallied a distance of 57 feet, 1/4 inches to take the weight throw title. Her old mark was 53-9. She now ranks fifth all-time in the weight throw, just less than inch shy of Assmus (57-1).

Also in the weight throw, Assmus placed runner-up with her mark of 55-10 ¼. Trisha Sumption also set a personal-best on the afternoon in the weight throw with her distance of 47-11 ¾; Sumption placed eighth in the event.

Assmus won the shot put with her final mark of 45-3 ¾. Sumption and Kae Jansuchka also posted top-10 finishes in the event. Sumption took sixth with her distance of 43-3 ¼ and Jansuchka claimed seventh-place with her mark of 42-4. Sumption and Jansuchka both set personal bests in the shot put.

Carly Carper and Gina Fritz posted top-10 finishes in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes. Carper took fourth in the 60 (7.78 seconds) and took third in the 200 (25.26). Fritz claimed fifth in the 60 (7.97) and sixth in the 200 (26.36).

In the 400-meter dash, both Kala McDonald and Jacleen Patterson placed in the top-five. McDonald and Patterson ran times of 59.35 and 1:00.85 to place second and fifth, respectively.

Karley Konkol and Brooke Peterson both set personal best times in the 800-meter run on Saturday. Konkol took third with her time of 2:21.92, while Peterson ran a time of 2:24.11 to finish eighth overall.

Three Jackrabbit runners finished in the top-five in the one-mile run. Jessica Eibs claimed the runner-up spot with her time of 5:03.98 and Lindsey Strait crossed the finish line less then seven seconds after Eibs to take third (5:10.55). Laura Lawton rounded out the top-five with her time of 5:15.77.

Jenna Grossenburg represented the Jackrabbits in the 3,000-meter run; she ran a time of 10:47.86 to take eighth.

In the 60-meter hurdles, Marissia Hagedorn claimed fifth overall with her final time of 9.15.

The Jackrabbits placed second overall in the 4x400-meter relay with their final time of 4:04.31.

SDSU claimed the third- through fifth-place spots in the high jump event. Mary Wirth (third) and Kali Olson (fourth) each posted a height of 5-6 ½, while Ashley Wagner (fifth) cleared a height of 5-2 ½.

Logan Amdahl cracked the top-10 with her height of 10-6 ¼ in the pole vault; she claimed 10th-place.

After running into the SDSU top-five last weekend, Carper jumped into the top-five on Saturday. Carper recorded a mark of 18-6 ½ in the long jump event as she finished second overall. Her mark today though moves her into fourth-place in the SDSU record books.

Jenna Stephens and Cailyn Schreurs finished back-to-back with their ninth- and 10th-place finishes in the long jump event. Stephens recorded a mark of 16-1, while Schreurs posted a distance of 16 ½.

Stephens also took fourth in the triple jump with her distance of 36-8 ½.

Four Jackrabbits ran in the 3,000-meter run at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite on Saturday.

Courtney Neubert and Megan West led the Jackrabbits with their third- and fourth-place finishes in the event. Neubert ran a final time of 10:08.17, while West posted a time of 10:09.79. The times today for Neubert and West are both personal bests.

Erin Hargens and Alex Suhr also competed in the event. Hargens took eighth with her time of 10:15.67 and Suhr placed 16th as she crossed the finish line in 10:31.91.

The Jackrabbits will be in action next weekend at the Iowa State Classic and the Bison Open. The Iowa State Classic is a two-day meet (Feb. 14-15), while the Bison Open takes place on Saturday.
