INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — DeAirra Goss scored a game-high 27 points in a 76-66 IUPUI upset win over South Dakota State in Summit League women’s basketball action Saturday in front of 403 fans in the Jungle.

With the loss, the Jackrabbits (17-8) and the Jaguars (18-6) are now tied atop the league standings with 8-1 records. SDSU’s eight-game win streak, four-game road win streak and 14-game win streak vs. Summit League opponents ended with the loss.

Junior Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) led the Jackrabbits with 13 points and five rebounds. Senior Steph Paluch (Pierre) and freshman Chynna Stevens (Clark) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.

After leading by four points at halftime, IUPUI used an 8-2 run to take the first double-figure lead of the game, 47-37, with 3:33 into the half. SDSU cut the lead to two points, 53-51, on a traditional three-point play by Clarin with 10:23 left.

IUPUI scored six-straight points to push its lead to 59-51, but the Jacks used a 5-2 spurt to make it 61-56 with 6:24 on the clock. Nevena Markovic made a jumper and a pair of free throws, Akilah Sims a layup and Goss a jumper to extend the Jaguars’ lead to nine points, 69-60, with 1:33 remaining.

Paluch sank a three-pointer and made two at foul line to cut the lead to 69-65 with 1:06 left, but IUPUI made 7 of 8 free throws the final 51 seconds to seal the win.

South Dakota State and IUPUI traded baskets the first six minutes of the first half with Clarin scoring eight of the Jacks’ first nine points. Neither team led by more than three points until the 7:06 mark when SDSU used an 8-2 run to take a 30-25 lead with 5:10 left. Stevens scored four points in the spurt.

IUPUI responded with a 9-0 run to push its lead to 34-30 with 2:38 remaining in the half. Goss scored six of her 15 first-half points during the run. The Jags extended their lead to six points when Nicole Rogers sank her fourth three-pointer of the half to make it 37-31 with 2:17 on the clock. The Jack scored four of the last six points to cut the Jags’ lead to four points at halftime, 39-35.

In addition to Goss, Rogers had 17 points, Markovic 12 and Sims 10 points for IUPUI.

South Dakota State returns to the friendly confines of Frost Arena next week when it hosts Omaha Feb. 13 at 7 p.m.
